The Opportunity:

Human Resources Business Partner, Manager, Japan will report to the Director, Human Resources, Japan and serve as the primary HR partner for Japan. The role will partner with HR leaders, Japan leaders, and people managers to translate and execute business priorities but not limited to practical workforce, talent, performance, and organizational actions. This individual will coordinate local HR delivery, guide assigned HR team members and implement global and regional HR programs in accordance with Japanese employment requirements and company policies.

Responsibilities:

Develop a strong understanding of Japan business priorities and convert them into workforce, talent, organization, and change plans.

Advise business and people managers on day-to-day people and organization matters.

Support annual performance, compensation promotion, talent succession, and employee-engagement surveys for Japan, partnering with HR COE (center of expertise) to ensure quality, consistency, and timely execution.

Coach managers on leadership, performance management, employee development, team dynamics, and organizational change.

Partner with regional HR leaders and global HR team to assess, evolve, and drive process improvement for local HR processes; clarify roles and responsibilities with appropriate localization.

Act as a trusted point of contact for employees and managers.

Manage employee relations matters and support workplace investigations in partnership with HR leadership and Legal, in accordance with Japanese law and company policy.

Lead Japan implementation of global and regional HR programs and policies, including stakeholder communication, manager enablement, and adoption.

Design, implement, and coordinate the end-to-end People Experience from recruitment and onboarding through employment changes and offboarding by partnering with Talent Acquisition, HR Operations, Total Rewards, and relevant business functions to ensure clear ownership, smooth handoffs, and consistent process execution.

Use people data and employee feedback to identify trends, resolve issues, and recommend practical improvements.

Set priorities, coordinate work, and coach assigned HR team members while supporting an inclusive and accountable team culture.

Monitor developments in employment -law developments, identify people-related risks, and ensure compliant local practices comply with legal requirements in partnership with Legal and HR leaders.

Required Skills, Experience and Education:

Bachelor’s degree in human resources, Business Administration, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

A minimum of six years of progressive HR business partner or HR generalist experience.

Experience supporting employees and managers in Japan, with strong knowledge of Japanese employment law and HR practices.

Native level Japanese and professional business-level English proficiency, with strong written and verbal communication skills in both languages.

Experience with workforce planning, performance management, talent management, employee relations, and organizational change.

Experience leading employees, projects, or broad workstreams with accountability for execution and results.

Sound judgment, discretion, and the ability to resolve complex or sensitive people matters.

Strong analytical, consultative, and influencing skills, with the ability to use data and business context to make practical recommendations.

Ability to work effectively across cultures, functions, and levels in a fast-paced, matrixed environment.

Preferred Skills:

Experience in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, life sciences, or another regulated technical environment.

Experience supporting a growing Japan organization within a global company.

Experience implementing global HR programs and adapting them to local requirements.

Experience with Workday or a comparable enterprise HR platform.
