General Description

The Automation Services Manager is accountable for the planning, management, and leadership of the Automation Services Team located within a particular office. The Automation Services Manager is an active participant in project resource planning and provides support and guidance to the Technical Engineering Leads and project teams executing within their office location. The Automation Services Manager is an active member of the Automation Services Management Team, working to maintain standards for quality execution and to drive efficiency and high resource utilization.

Additionally, this position is responsible for the lead role in design, development, and implementation of our customers’ automation systems during capital projects.  The Automation Services Manager will be a significant contributor and often the lead technical resource on customer projects.  They will deliver quality solutions and services to customers using the technologies provided by DeltaV and other Emerson solutions.    The Automation Services Manager will have close interaction with project management and account management to ensure that work is delivered within schedule and budget and with the high level of quality expected by our customers.  Additionally, the Automation Services Manager will provide mentoring and leadership to other engineers assigned to projects.

The Automation Services Manager will also be expected to provide support to sales, generate estimates and proposals, and contribute to operations and project management functions.

Specific Responsibilities

Engineering & Business Management Responsibilities

Active participation in the resource planning meetings to align projected resource demands with development opportunities for engineering team members

Work closely with the resource managers to allocate technical resources to sales support opportunities and estimating tasks as needed

Work with Automation Services leadership to drive strategic company, department, and project objectives and communicate goals to Automation Services direct reports

Participate in manager meetings

Promote compliance with Project Management procedures, execution methodologies, and engineering standards within the Automation Services team

Contribute to execution standards including configuration standards, FAT standards, documentation standards, and quality management system

Identify opportunities for innovation and efficiency improvements within projects

Participate in sales pursuit and proposal efforts

Personnel Management Responsibilities

Develop and administer Career Development Plans for direct reports and propose opportunities and promotions for associates

Provide performance feedback for direct reports, both through post-project reviews and monthly one-on-one coaching meetings

Hold direct reports accountable for the achievement of objectives and for meeting the performance standards of the Automation Services team

Understand and interpret company policies and manage employees within the boundaries of those policies

Mentor and coach staff to foster skill enhancement, performance improvement, and regional development

Contribute to department training

Monitor utilization targets of direct reports and establish strategies to meet them

Work with Human Resources, and Technical Engineering Leads to ensure active recruitment of engineering staff

Project Leadership / Implementation Responsibilities

Work with the project manager to develop and maintain project schedules

Distribute work amongst the project team in order to meet schedule

Monitor project scope and identify and evaluate potential deviations

Design process control strategies (continuous and batch)

Implement control strategy configurations

Write documentation for a variety of continuous, APC, and batch process control applications

Support start-up and commissioning activities at customer sites

Troubleshoot system hardware, software, network, and instrument bus technologies

Contribute to company procedures and configuration standards

Generate project configuration estimates and assist in the generation of proposal documents

Travel in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia – approximately 25%

Qualifications

Required Competencies

Required Education and Experience

S. in CHE, EE, ME, Comp. Eng,, Comp. Sci., other related disciplines

7+ years of relevant experience; 5 years in a technical role

Intermediate level experience with the Emerson DeltaV Control System

Knowledge of management practices, human behavior, and group dynamics

Preferred Experience/Competencies

Batch process control/ISA S88 experience

Understanding of regulated and validated systems, including FDA, cGMP, and GAMP

Experience with Emerson Legacy Control Systems (PROVOX, RS3)

Windows Server 2003/2008 and network troubleshooting skills
