Underwriter, Germany (m/w/d)
About the role
In this role, you will be responsible for driving profitable business from an assigned group of brokers in Germany and partnering closely with our Sales organization. You will underwrite and manage products across Coalition’s portfolio while serving as a trusted partner to brokers and customers in the German market. Along the way, you will help clients better understand how to protect their businesses, bringing together underwriting expertise, business acumen, and a relationship-first approach.
Responsibilities
Underwrite new and renewal accounts within authority, while maintaining alignment to underwriting guidelines, risk appetite, carrier requirements, and applicable German market expectations.
Build and deepen relationships with cyber specialists and sophisticated P&C placing brokers in Germany, becoming a trusted underwriting partner in the market.
Maintain disciplined underwriting files, documentation, and internal tool usage in line with Coalition’s workflows and governance standards.
Participate directly in broker and client meetings, with responsibility for external presentation, account strategy, and underwriting rationale.
Handle more nuanced coverage, structure, and wording discussions, escalating or partnering with CPU and other leaders as needed on non-standard issues.
Partner with Sales, Product, Claims, CPU, and Coalition’s security team to bring technical and portfolio insight into underwriting decisions and broker/client discussions.
Contribute feedback on underwriting guidelines, tools, and process improvements that help Coalition scale high-quality production underwriting in Germany.
Regular travel required for broker relationship management, client meetings, broker education, and market development activity across Germany.
Skills and Qualifications
Typically 3–6+ years of underwriting or related experience, including meaningful exposure to cyber, technology E&O, or other complex specialty risks.
Ability to analyze underwriting and pricing risks independently and make sound decisions within authority.
Ability to use risk analysis and underwriting guidelines to explain decisions and rationale confidently to brokers and clients.
Strong negotiation, communication, and relationship-management skills in a broker-distributed environment.
Developing fluency in complex coverage structures, client-facing presentation, and wording-related conversations.
Familiarity with the German broker landscape and commercial insurance market.
Professional fluency in German and English.
