Senior Structures Design Engineer – Advanced Concepts
The Senior Structures Design Engineer will develop the primary and secondary airframe structure for an advanced narrowbody aircraft from concept through preliminary design. The role joins structural architecture with practical product definition across the wing, pylon and engine interfaces, fuselage, empennage, control surfaces, and high-lift installations. This position will be based onsite at our South Burlington, VT office location, our Raleigh, NC office. Remote candidates may be considered for a hybrid role, with monthly visits to South Burlington, VT for in person work.
How you will contribute to revolutionizing electric aviation:
Develop structural concepts, load paths, layouts, and configuration trades for metallic, composite, and hybrid airframe structure
Create and manage three-dimensional CAD definition for primary and secondary structure, joints, attachments, interfaces, and installations
Translate aircraft-level requirements, loads, aerodynamic geometry, systems interfaces, and manufacturing constraints into structural design requirements
Work in parallel design lanes spanning wing primary structure; pylon and high-lift integration; and fuselage, empennage, and aircraft-level definition
Perform preliminary sizing and hand calculations to guide geometry before detailed stress substantiation
Design for manufacturability, assembly, inspection, maintainability, repair, weight, cost, and schedule
Develop interface-control definition, drawings, trade studies, design-review material, and configuration-controlled product data
Coordinate closely with Stress, Loads, Aerodynamics, Structural Dynamics, Materials and Processes, Systems, Manufacturing, and team counterparts
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
5+ years of aircraft structural design or closely related aerospace product-development experience
Demonstrated proficiency developing complex aerospace hardware in CATIA, 3DEXPERIENCE, or a comparable CAD environment
Working knowledge of aircraft load paths, structural sizing, joints, fasteners, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, and configuration control
Experience taking structural concepts through layout, detailed definition, build, and test support
Ability to make sound design decisions with incomplete information and communicate assumptions, risks, and interfaces clearly
Must be a US Person to be considered for the role
Above and Beyond Qualifications:
Narrowbody, transport-category, wing, pylon, nacelle, fuselage, empennage, control-surface, or high-lift structural design experience
Experience with both composite and metallic airframe structures and supplier design packages
Experience supporting preliminary design reviews, certification planning, structural test, or manufacturing introduction
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
This role requires extended computer and CAD work and regular work in office, laboratory, manufacturing, and hangar environments. Occasional travel and use of standard person protective equipment may be required.
