Senior Stress Engineer – Advanced Concepts
The Senior Stress Engineer will size and substantiate primary and secondary structure for an advanced narrowbody aircraft through conceptual and preliminary design. The role will establish credible structural margins and design guidance across global airframe sizing, wing–pylon and high-lift interfaces, composite and metallic structure, and joints. This position will be based onsite at our South Burlington, VT office location, our Raleigh, NC office. Remote candidates may be considered for a hybrid role, with monthly visits to South Burlington, VT for in person work.
How you will contribute to revolutionizing electric aviation:
Perform classical and finite element stress analysis of aircraft primary and secondary structures under static, dynamic, ground, pressurization, thermal, and system-interface loads
Develop global and local finite element models, free-body diagrams, load paths, internal loads, sizing methods, and margins of safety
Support parallel analysis lanes for global sizing and load paths; wing, pylon, and high-lift interfaces; and composites, joints, and local optimization
Evaluate strength, stability, stiffness, local failure, joint, bearing, bypass, buckling, crippling, and fastener-load behavior as applicable
Provide timely sizing direction to structural designers and close the design-analysis loop as aircraft geometry evolves
Define analysis assumptions, methods, allowables, load cases, model-validation needs, and structural test objectives
Document analysis and technical risk for design reviews, partner interfaces, and future certification planning
Coordinate with Loads, Structural Dynamics, Design, Composites, Materials and Processes, Test, Manufacturing, and suppliers
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
Five or more years of aircraft structural analysis, sizing, or substantiation experience
Strong fundamentals in mechanics of materials, structural stability, finite element analysis, and aircraft load paths
Experience with NASTRAN, FEMAP, HyperMesh, Abaqus, or comparable structural-analysis tools
Experience analyzing metallic, composite, or hybrid aerospace structures and joints
Ability to communicate assumptions, limitations, margins, and design recommendations clearly
Must be a US Person to be considered for the role
Above and Beyond Qualifications:
Transport-category wing, pylon, fuselage, empennage, control-surface, pressure-cabin, or high-lift analysis experience
Experience with composite failure criteria, fatigue and damage tolerance, nonlinear analysis, or structural-test correlation
Experience developing methods, automation, or certification-oriented substantiation documentation
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
This role requires extended computer work and regular access to office, laboratory, manufacturing, hangar, and structural-test environments. Occasional travel and use of standard personal protective equipment may be required.
