Senior Mechanical Design Engineer – Advanced Concepts
The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer will provide senior technical ownership for the architecture and mechanical design of narrowbody high-lift devices. The role will lead flap and slat mechanism, kinematic, actuation, installation, and interface development from concept through a configuration ready for preliminary and detailed sizing. This position will be based onsite at our South Burlington, VT office location, our Raleigh, NC office. Remote candidates may be considered for a hybrid role, with monthly visits to South Burlington, VT for in person work.
How you will contribute to revolutionizing electric aviation:
Lead architecture and design trades for high-lift devices, support structure, tracks, hinges, linkages, drive systems, actuation, indication, locking, and installation
Develop kinematic models, packaging studies, mechanism layouts, load paths, interface definition, and three-dimensional CAD
Translate aerodynamic requirements, loads, control-system needs, safety objectives, maintainability, and manufacturing constraints into mechanical design requirements
Own mechanical integration across the wing, movable surfaces, actuation, hydraulics or electromechanical systems, flight controls, structure, and test provisions
Identify failure modes, single-point vulnerabilities, jamming risks, tolerance sensitivities, rigging needs, and inspection or maintenance access early in design
Coordinate with High-Lift Aerodynamics, Loads, Structures, Stress, Systems Integration, Flight Controls, Safety, Manufacturing, Test, and suppliers
Guide the Mechanical Design Engineer, review technical work, and communicate decisions, assumptions, interfaces, and risks
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field
7+ years of aerospace mechanical design, mechanism design, actuation, or aircraft installation experience
Strong proficiency with CATIA, 3DEXPERIENCE, or a comparable CAD and product-definition environment
Demonstrated experience with kinematics, bearings, joints, fasteners, tolerances, interfaces, and mechanical load paths
Experience leading complex mechanical hardware from concept through build and test
Must be a US Person to be considered for the role
Above and Beyond Qualifications:
Commercial-aircraft flap, slat, control-surface, landing-gear, door, actuation, or other safety-critical mechanism experience
Experience with system safety, jam analysis, fatigue, wear, lubrication, rigging, maintainability, or certification planning
Experience with hydraulic or electromechanical actuation and supplier technical leadership
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
This role requires extended computer and CAD work and regular work around aircraft, mechanisms, laboratories, manufacturing areas, and test equipment. Occasional travel, hands-on hardware work, and use of standard personal protective equipment may be required.
