Senior Engineering Manager, Wirecutter
About the Role:
Wirecutter, the product review and shopping guide arm of The New York Times Company, is looking for an experienced Senior Engineering Manager for Wirecutter's Growth team. You will lead the engineers who build experiences that grow and strengthen our direct relationship with readers. The team's work includes search discovery, registration, newsletters, and distribution across The New York Times and other platforms. This role reports to the Wirecutter VP of Engineering.
Every year, Wirecutter reaches millions of users and drives billions of dollars in sales for our merchant partners. Through rigorous testing, research, and reporting across hundreds of merchants, our dedication to helping people find the best products remains as relevant today as it did over ten years ago. We deliver human-generated, straightforward recommendations that inspire readers while saving them time, effort, and money.
Hybrid work (from home and in-office) is preferred for this role, although full-time remote applicants will also be considered. As a hybrid employee, you can typically expect to come into our New York City headquarters two days each week.
Responsibilities:
Lead five to ten front-end engineers at a range of career levels
Coach and mentor individual contributors and emerging managers to build high-performing teams
Motivate engineers to excel through regular feedback, recognition, career development, and an inclusive environment
Own execution, staffing, technical health, and operational practices
Ensure technical decisions have clear accountability and align with Wirecutter's broader technical strategy
Partner with Product, Design, and Data team members to shape the roadmap and translate business goals into technical strategies and measurable engineering outcomes
Collaborate with teams across Wirecutter and The NY Times to manage dependencies and deliver shared initiatives
Communicate plans, progress, risks, and tradeoffs clearly to technical and nontechnical partners and senior stakeholders
Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world
Basic Qualifications:
3+ years of engineering management experience, including hiring, developing and retaining engineers, and building teams where people do their best work
Expertise in front-end web development, operating production software, and contemporary software delivery practices
Experience managing senior engineers and partnering with staff-level engineers and other senior technical leaders
Proven experience translating product and business goals into engineering outcomes and make thoughtful tradeoffs and decisions with cross-organizational impact, handling multiple stakeholders/initiatives
Fluency with AI-assisted software development and its use in engineering workflows
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with Typescript, React and GraphQL, and site performance optimization
Experience with experimentation platforms, A/B testing, or other data-informed product development practices
Experience collaborating with Data or Analytics teams in a commercial, metrics-driven environment
Familiarity with web accessibility, SEO, or emerging search and discovery technologies
Experience shipping or leading the adoption of an AI-powered workflow change within a team

Compensation and Benefits For This Role:
In addition to base salary, this role is also eligible for variable pay, such as an annual bonus and restricted stock. The annual base pay range for this role is between:
$185,000—$210,000 USD
