Senior Backend Engineer - Java
ABOUT THE ROLE
Design, build, and operate Java services powering the client's financial operations platform — spanning the core Java platform and paved-path microservices on AWS. Own features end-to-end, guided by our north star: quality first, speed second.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Build scalable, secure backend services in Java 17 using domain-driven design and hexagonal architecture.
Deliver APIs via REST (JAX-RS), GraphQL Federation subgraphs, and gRPC with Protobuf.
Implement event-driven integrations with Kafka and SQS; follow zero-downtime database migration standards.
Own production operations: Datadog monitoring, structured logging, SLOs, incident response.
Perform mandatory peer code reviews, uphold client's RFC standards, and mentor mid-level engineers.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
6+ years of hands-on backend software development experience with strong Java/JVM expertise (Java 17+ preferred).
Strong experience building scalable microservices using Spring Boot or similar Java frameworks.
Proven experience designing distributed systems, defining service boundaries, and implementing event-driven architectures.
Strong API development experience, including REST APIs; experience with GraphQL and/or gRPC is highly preferred.
Hands-on experience with messaging technologies such as Kafka and AWS SQS/SNS.
Production experience with AWS cloud services, including containerized workloads (ECS/Fargate or Kubernetes), S3, DynamoDB, RDS/Aurora, Secrets Manager, and related cloud-native services.
Experience building and deploying applications using Docker and Infrastructure as Code (Terraform preferred).
Strong knowledge of relational databases such as PostgreSQL or Oracle, with experience designing scalable data models and implementing database migrations.
Experience working with modern CI/CD pipelines and source control tools (GitLab preferred; GitHub Actions, Jenkins, Azure DevOps, or similar accepted).
Experience with observability and production operations, including Datadog, CloudWatch, structured logging, metrics, monitoring, alerting, and incident response.
Solid understanding of software engineering best practices, including code reviews, automated testing, clean architecture, and maintainable code.
Experience with performance tuning, scalability, resilience, and high-availability backend systems.
Security-first mindset with experience building systems that handle sensitive or regulated data.
Ability to mentor engineers, participate in architecture discussions, and drive engineering best practices across the team.

Experience with GraphQL Federation (Apollo Federation).
Experience with gRPC and Protocol Buffers (Protobuf).
Experience with JAX-RS/Jersey.
Experience with Redis, OpenSearch, or Flink.
