Job Status: Full-time

Location: Remote

Compensation: Salary (Exempt)

Position Type: Direct Hire; note, this is not a contract role

Pay Range: $67K - $80K, based on experience

Shift: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM ET, Monday - Friday

The Bookkeeping Manager leads Patriot's Bookkeeping team and owns the quality of every set of books the team touches. This is a player-coach role: you will carry a portfolio of client accounts while setting the standard for accurate, GAAP-compliant work, coaching a team of 7 bookkeepers, and representing the team's needs to our Accounting, Product, and Operations leaders. We look for an experienced bookkeeper who knows the difference between books that balance and books that are right, and a leader who can hold a team to that standard with clarity and care.

What You’ll Be Doing:

Lead the Bookkeeping team’s day-to-day functions, including workload assignment, client portfolio balancing, throughput, and coverage.

Set, document, and enforce the team’s bookkeeping quality standards in line with GAAP, and hold the team accountable to them.

Review team members’ work through regular quality audits of client books, catching errors early and turning findings into coaching.

Assist with client accounts, completing new account setups, clean-up projects, and ongoing monthly book closures, including:

Bank account and credit card data imports

Journal entries

Account reconciliations

Transaction categorization

General ledger review and corrections

Serve as the team’s highest point of bookkeeping escalation, using payroll, payroll tax, and accounting knowledge to resolve complex customer issues in a professional and timely manner.

Track and report on team performance, quality, and capacity to the Head of Operations, giving a clear and honest picture of what is working, what isn’t, and the plan to fix it.

Act as the voice of the Bookkeeping team with our Accounting, Product, and internal teams, advising on workflows, tools, and pain points when new products and features are built.

Analyze internal processes and workflows to improve team efficiency and reduce manual work.

Work with the Training Department to build and maintain new-hire training and continuing education content for bookkeepers.

Provide team coaching and development through weekly 1:1s and performance check-ins.

Interviewing and hiring new team members.

Delivering performance evaluations and following the disciplinary process according to company policy.

Serve as an ambassador for Patriot and the entire team by always maintaining professionalism and upholding our core values.

Please note this is a sample of what you’ll be doing. This job requires you to be able to adapt to change quickly in order to deliver an exceptional customer experience. Your duties, responsibilities, and activities may change at any time with or without notice.

What You’ll Need:

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.

3+ years of hands-on bookkeeping experience, including monthly closes, reconciliations, and clean-up projects.

2+ years of experience managing or leading a team, including coaching, performance feedback, and accountability conversations.

Strong working knowledge of GAAP and USA-based accounting, payroll, and payroll tax.

A sharp eye for quality: you can review a set of books, spot what is wrong or incomplete, and explain how to fix it.

Sound judgment to recognize when a team’s work is not meeting the standard and the confidence to act on it.

Ability to report on team performance clearly and candidly, with data to back it up.

Superior people skills, including verbal and written communication, with all levels of employees and customers.

Proven ability to handle escalated customer issues and follow-ups with customers.

Tech-savvy (we are a software company, after all). You have to be comfortable with technology and able to pick up new software and tools quickly.

Stays composed and solution-focused during busy or challenging interactions, with a consistently professional and positive approach.

Must be able to use your time wisely, stay organized, and prioritize various tasks throughout the day.

Capacity to accept and utilize constructive criticism.

Self-motivated and eager to keep learning — whether it's a product update, a new feature, or a better way to help a customer.
