Environmental Health & Safety Manager, Data Center Construction and Operations

About the role

Anthropic is hiring an EHS Manager, Data Center Construction and Operations to own environment, health, and safety across the full lifecycle of our data center sites — from construction and commissioning through to live operations. As we scale the physical infrastructure behind our research, this role makes sure the high-hazard work of building and running data centers is done safely, by our partners and for our people.

This is a specialized, field-facing, program-ownership role, and contractor safety is at the center of it. Most of the hands-on work at these sites is performed by general contractors, subcontractors, and specialty trades, so your impact comes through how well you set expectations, qualify and oversee those partners, and hold multi-employer worksites to our safety standards. You'll be Anthropic's safety presence on the ground — through active construction, the transition of commissioning, and the shift into operational EHS once a site is live.

You'll own these programs end to end today, and as our data center footprint grows you may build and lead a team to support them. You won't be doing this alone: you'll partner closely with the EHS Lead — who will help you stand up the vendor, consultant, and specialist support you'll rely on — and work with our construction, infrastructure, operations, Security, and Legal partners, as well as the contractor and operator organizations running the sites.

Responsibilities

Contractor safety is the core of this role. You'll build and run the programs that govern how contractors work on our sites — prequalification and selection, safety plan and method-statement review, site-specific orientation, high-hazard work permitting, and the audits and inspections that verify the work matches the plan. On multi-employer worksites you'll set clear expectations, coordinate across general contractors and subcontractors, and hold every party accountable for working safely.

You'll own EHS across the construction, commissioning, and operations phases. During construction that means the high-hazard exposures data centers involve — electrical and energized systems, working at height, heavy equipment, cranes and rigging, excavation, and fire and life safety — governed by OSHA construction (29 CFR 1926) requirements. Through commissioning you'll manage the safety of energization and testing, and as sites go live you'll transition programs to operational safety under general industry standards (29 CFR 1910), including electrical safety and NFPA 70E, lockout/tagout, and arc flash.

You'll investigate incidents, near misses, and injuries across your sites, drive them to root cause, and follow through on corrective actions — and you'll own EHS record keeping and reporting across the portfolio, including OSHA requirements and any contractor-injury tracking. You'll be the owner's safety representative in the room with construction and operations partners: reviewing readiness, walking sites, escalating when work isn't safe, and stopping it when it needs to stop.

You'll drive a consistent safety culture across geographically distributed sites and different partner organizations — building emergency preparedness, running or overseeing drills, and making sure lessons from one site reach the others. You'll select and manage the external support these programs depend on — third-party safety, industrial hygiene, and audit partners — with the EHS Lead's help in setting those relationships up, and you'll contribute to our site design and safety standards so new builds start from a safer baseline.

You may be a good fit if you

Have 8+ years of EHS experience, with significant time spent on construction, mission-critical, data center, or heavy industrial/operational projects

Bring deep, hands-on expertise in contractor and construction safety, including prequalification, safety plan review, high-hazard work permitting, and multi-employer worksite oversight

Have strong working knowledge of OSHA construction standards (29 CFR 1926) and general industry standards (29 CFR 1910), plus electrical safety and NFPA 70E, lockout/tagout, and fall protection

Are comfortable being the safety authority on an active worksite — making clear calls, holding contractors accountable, and stopping work when it isn't safe

Can build a program from the ground up and run it autonomously across multiple sites, prioritizing well when everything looks urgent

Are able to motivate and persuade contractors, operators, and cross-functional partners to engage with safety, not just meet the minimum

Are comfortable spending significant time in the field and traveling to sites, adapting quickly as projects move through construction, commissioning, and operations

Write clear, useful safety plans, playbooks, and program documents, and can create engaging training and presentations

Have hands-on experience with software tools for contractor management, incident reporting, risk assessment, and related functions

Strong candidates may also have

A Bachelor's degree in occupational health and safety, construction management, engineering, or a related field

Certifications such as CHST, CSP, ASP/GSP, or comparable US-recognized construction/safety credentials

Direct experience with data center, mission-critical, or large capital construction projects

Experience managing safety through commissioning and the handover into operations

Deep electrical safety expertise (NFPA 70E, arc flash, energized work)

Experience building a contractor safety program from scratch across distributed sites

Familiarity with ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems) and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management Systems)

Excellent computer skills — quick to pick up new applications and systems at the user and/or administrator level

The annual compensation range for this role is listed below.

For sales roles, the range provided is the role’s On Target Earnings ("OTE") range, meaning that the range includes both the sales commissions/sales bonuses target and annual base salary for the role.

$320,000—$405,000 USD
