Board Certified Urology Physician Martinsburg VA Medical Center – Martinsburg, WV

Position Overview

The Contractor shall provide Board Certified Urology Physician services onsite at the Martinsburg VA Medical Center. The physician will deliver comprehensive urological care to Veterans of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), including outpatient, inpatient, surgical, and on-call services in accordance with VA clinical standards and facility requirements.

Contractor (1099 / Locum Tenens or equivalent arrangement)

Full-time clinical coverage with on-call responsibilities

Work Schedule

Clinic Hours:Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM

Direct Patient Care:95% of duties

On-Call Coverage:

10 days/month total

Includes approximately 8 weeknight call days/month (4:30 PM – 8:00 AM)

1 weekend/month (Saturday–Monday coverage rotation)

Must be available for phone consultation and onsite response as required:

Phone response within 15 minutes

Onsite response within 60 minutes

Licensure

Current, full, and unrestricted medical license in any U.S. state, territory, or DC

No history of suspended, revoked, restricted, or voluntarily surrendered licensure

Board Certification

Board Certified or Board Eligible in Urology (American Board of Urology – ABU)

Current BLS and ACLS certification required

All CME requirements must be maintained and up to date

Education & Training

Completion of an accredited Urology residency (minimum 3 years Urologic Surgery training)

Demonstrated competency in full scope urologic procedures and surgical techniques

Credentialing & Privileging

Must successfully complete VA credentialing and privileging (per VHA Directive 1100.20 & 1100.21)

No services may be rendered prior to approval by Medical Executive Board and Medical Center Director

Clinical Responsibilities

The Urology Physician will provide comprehensive urologic care including, but not limited to:

Outpatient & Clinic Care

Evaluation and management of urology patients in outpatient clinic

Cystoscopy procedures

Vasectomies and minor urologic procedures

Scrotal and testicular procedures

Prostate-related procedures (TURP and related surgeries)

Bladder cancer management

Ureteroscopy procedures

Kidney and stone disease management

Inpatient rounding for urology patients

Surgical Responsibilities

General urologic surgeries including:

Ureteral procedures

Endoscopic procedures

Prostate procedures

Bladder procedures

Kidney procedures

Use of urological equipment including:

Holmium laser

ESWL (Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy)

Fluoroscopy

Robotics, laparoscopic, and highly complex urologic surgeries are not required.

Specialty Evaluations

Compensation & Pension (C&P) exams related to urologic conditions

Agent Orange evaluations (urology-related cases only)

Patient Communication & Documentation

Communicate all test results per VA policy (VHA Directive 1088)

Critical results must be addressed within 60 minutes

Ensure proper documentation, read-back procedures, and patient notification

Coordinate care plans and discharge instructions for continuity of care

Additional Responsibilities

Adherence to all VA clinical policies and procedures

No sample medications permitted

Provide discharge education and follow-up care instructions

Ensure timely completion of consults and patient encounters

Maintain compliance with VA EMR/EHR and mandatory training requirements

Required Competencies

Strong clinical and surgical urology skills

Ability to manage high-volume veteran patient population

Excellent communication and documentation skills

Ability to work independently and respond to urgent clinical needs

Fluency in English (spoken, written, and clinical documentation)

Performance Expectations

Timely completion of all patient encounters and consults

Compliance with VA wait time standards

Availability during scheduled clinic and on-call periods

Full participation in credentialing, CME, and mandatory VA training programs

Summary
