VP, Engineering
TailorCare is transforming the experience of specialty care. Our comprehensive care program takes a profoundly personal, evidence-based approach to improving patient outcomes for joint, back, and muscle conditions. By carefully assessing patients' symptoms, health histories, preferences, and goals with predictive data and the latest evidence-based guidelines, we help patients choose and navigate the most effective treatment pathway for them every step of the way.
TailorCare values the experiences and perspectives of individuals from all backgrounds. We are a highly collaborative, curious, and determined team passionate about scaling a high-growth start-up to improve the lives of those in pain. TailorCare is a remote-first company with our corporate office located in Nashville.
About the Role
As VP, Engineering, you will own the engineering teams that serve our patients and our care teams directly: a data science and decisioning team that determines the right next step for each patient, a patient engagement platform team that delivers those steps through app, messaging, and voice, and a care team productivity team that builds the workflows and tools our clinical and care staff use every day. Together, these teams shape the patient journey from first outreach to care completion. Our data platform and infrastructure teams sit alongside you under the CTO and provide the foundation your teams build on.
TailorCare is growing fast. We are adding payers and markets quickly, and the systems and teams you lead will need to scale with that pace. You will set the engineering plan for the patient journey in close partnership with Product, grow the directors and managers who run the teams, and represent your organization's commitments and progress to the executive team. You will join strong leaders, a clear operating model built around outcome teams, and some of the most interesting problems in healthcare: turning predictive models into decisions that measurably change patient outcomes at scale.
What Success Looks Like
Our decisioning platform is live and guiding patient-level decisions, with the three teams working as one connected chain from decision to delivery.
Patient activation moves measurably because of changes your organization shipped, and you can show which ones.
Your directors and managers are visibly stronger leaders than when you arrived, and at least one is ready for a larger role.
Commitments to clients and the executive team are kept, and the ones that were not realistic were caught, together with Product, before they were made.
Primary Responsibilities
Engineering organization: Own three product engineering teams spanning data science, machine learning, and software engineering, through their directors and managers. You are accountable for their outcomes, delivery, and talent.
Business outcomes: Own the technology, data, and decisioning systems behind patient engagement, care activities, and completion, measured by business outcomes rather than output. You are the person the company looks to for how those systems perform across the care journey.
Roadmap: Set the engineering strategy and turn it into a roadmap with Product and your engineering and data science leaders. Co-author operational goals with our value-based care and clinical leaders. In an intelligence-led company, the "what" is inseparable from what the technology can do.
Product partnership: Jointly own the roadmap with Product leadership under clear decision rights. Product managers are embedded in each team, and you hold final say on technical feasibility, sequencing, and engineering capacity. The same peer relationship, with shared goals at the interfaces, extends to Clinical Operations, Patient Engagement, Marketing, Medical Economics, and the platform teams.
Cross-team tradeoffs: Make the engineering call on tradeoffs with Product and operations partners, such as decision quality versus channel execution, or outreach intensity versus patient experience. Drive the group to a decision when a tradeoff is hard, and escalate to the CTO when a choice would change the company's strategic bet.
Leadership bench: Hire, develop, and hold accountable your directors and managers. Develop first-time engineering managers into capable leads, and make the calls on team design and succession.
Commitments: Own the practice that keeps Product and Engineering aligned: no client or date commitment goes out until you and Product leadership agree it is buildable. Keep the executive team current on delivery against the roadmap.
Technical standard: Set architecture for patient-facing and care-team systems within the direction set by the CTO. Make build-versus-buy decisions within your scope, and own the engineering practices that let teams ship fast and safely.
Compliance: Everything your teams build handles protected health information under HIPAA, in a HITRUST environment. Own the compliance posture of your systems in partnership with Security and Compliance.

Qualifications
Required
12 or more years in software engineering, with 7 or more leading multi-team organizations through directors or managers.
Experience carrying a business outcome, not only delivery: you have been responsible for a metric the company watched, and you can explain how your engineering decisions moved it.
A record of developing leaders, including growing first-time engineering managers into capable leads. We will ask for names.
Experience keeping commitments realistic: feasibility surfaced before the promise, and delivery against hard external deadlines without slipping quality.
A track record of building strong, trusting partnerships with product management, with clear decision rights and shared accountability rather than a requirements handoff.
Experience in a startup or scale-up where structure had to be built rather than inherited.
Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related quantitative field, or equivalent demonstrated experience.
An advanced degree in a quantitative field is a plus, not a requirement.
Ability and willingness to travel up to 10% as needed for onsite meetings, team collaboration, and company events.
Preferred
Healthcare, payer, or value-based care experience, and familiarity with HIPAA-regulated systems.
Experience with contact center, telephony, or omni-channel engagement platforms.
Experience shipping decisioning or personalization systems where model output drives real-world actions.
