Vice President, Portfolio Chemistry
The Opportunity:
The Vice President, Portfolio Chemistry will report to the Senior Vice President, Medicinal Chemistry and Screening Sciences, and lead Revolution Medicines' multidisciplinary Portfolio Chemistry organization, with responsibility for Medicinal Chemistry and chemistry leadership across the discovery portfolio. This executive will provide strategic and scientific leadership for the advancement of oncology programs from validated hit series through development candidate nomination.
Working at the intersection of chemistry, biology, structural sciences, computational chemistry, and translational research, the VP will be accountable for portfolio chemistry outcomes and delivery of high-quality development candidates while driving operational excellence, scientific innovation, and organizational performance across the portfolio. In this role, VP of Portfolio Chemistry will integrate modern medicinal chemistry strategies, with AI-enabled drug discovery and predictive analytics tools.
Working closely with the Vice President, Early Discovery Chemistry, this leader will ensure seamless transition of differentiated chemical matter into lead optimization while maintaining clear accountability for candidate delivery.
Key responsibilities will include:
Partner with Research leadership to define and execute a long-term strategy for expanding the portfolio through advancement of novel small-molecule therapeutics.
Develop and execute the chemistry strategy supporting advancement of Revolution Medicines' discovery portfolio from hit validation through development candidate nomination.
Partner with the VP, Early Discovery Chemistry to establish clear criteria and ensure effective transitions from hit identification/validation into portfolio medicinal chemistry.
Drive integration of chemistry with computational chemistry, digital drug discovery, AI/ML technologies, and data science capabilities across discovery workflows.
Lead organizational planning, internal and external resource allocation (CRO management), talent strategy, and capability development across multiple functions.
Partner with Research Leadership to prioritize resources and maximize portfolio value.
Drive alignment across Research functions to support a dynamic portfolio of discovery and development-stage programs.
Vision, strategy, leadership: Partner with Research Leadership to translate portfolio strategy into differentiated chemistry programs and ensure effective advancement of the highest-value opportunities. Establish and maintain exceptional chemistry project leadership across the portfolio, developing capable project leaders.
Innovation: Champion predictive analytics, AI/ML methodologies, and computational approaches that increase throughput and accelerate DMTA cycles.
Management excellence: Manage a high-performing group, sustain productivity through strategic hiring, mentoring, and support for individual career growth. Be accountable for an annual budget.
Cross-functional collaboration: Position the MedChem function as a bridge across Research, enabling bench-to-bedside insights. Serve as a visible leader representing Revolution Medicines’ scientific excellence internally and externally.
Required Skills, Experience and Education:
Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry.
Minimum 16+ years of industrial drug discovery experience with extensive medicinal chemistry leadership.
Demonstrated success advancing multiple programs from hit validation through development candidate nomination and ideally IND-enabling studies.
Proven leadership of multidisciplinary chemistry organizations supporting multiple concurrent discovery programs.
Deep expertise in medicinal chemistry, structure-based drug design, optimization strategies, and candidate selection.
Experience integrating computational chemistry, AI/ML technologies, and digital drug discovery into medicinal chemistry workflows.
Strong experience managing external collaborations, CROs, and strategic partnerships.
Outstanding leadership, communication, and organizational development skills.
Demonstrated ability to build, lead, and foster a collaborative culture on interdisciplinary teams.
Preferred Skills:
Experience in oncology drug discovery.
Experience of successful IND filings and clinical candidate delivery.
Record of scientific publications, patents, and invited presentations.
Experience with alternative modality, ex. molecular glue and ADC drug discovery.
