Technical Program Manager, Science Strategy & Communications
About the role
Accelerating scientific discovery is a core part of Anthropic's mission, and we believe the highest-leverage path to this is enabling researchers externally to use Claude effectively for their work. This involves communicating Claude’s rapidly improving scientific capabilities through outreach and editorial programs, as well as putting Claude in the hands of researchers through grants, ergonomic research tools, and access programs that help scientists do more with AI than was previously possible.
We’re hiring a Technical Program Manager to be the bridge between the researchers advancing Claude’s scientific capabilities and the outside scientific community. Embedded with the Discovery team, you’ll conceptualize and run the programs that get Claude into scientists’ hands and shape the Anthropic Science Blog, working with Communications, Editorial, Beneficial Deployments, and external partners such as universities, funders, and scientific societies.
This is a technical role, not a purely operational one. These programs already have strong operational and editorial owners. You bring research taste and a firsthand understanding of how academia works, so we’re looking for someone who has been a researcher themselves, ideally through a postdoc or beyond. You’ll have significant autonomy: once aligned with Discovery’s leads on strategy, you’ll drive decisions on what we fund, what we publish, and how we engage with academic communities
Key responsibilities
Act as the interface between research and the outside world. Stay close to the researchers working on Claude's scientific capabilities and translate rapid capability gain into use by external researchers.
Help set Anthropic’s external science strategy. Recommend which scientific areas and communities we focus on, and how our programs, collaborations, and communications fit together
Guide the scientific direction of the Anthropic Science Blog. Work with researchers and the Editorial team to identify and source stories internal and external stories worth telling, draft and edit posts, and keep a steady cadence of high-quality science writing.
Drive forward external science programs. Design, launch, and run grants and access programs such as AI for Science grants and Team plan offerings for research groups, as well as partnerships with scientific foundations and grantmaking organizations. Work with Beneficial Deployments on programs aimed at the highest-impact scientific areas.
Gather feedback from scientific communities. Identify usage patterns and gather feedback on how researchers use Claude and what capability gaps exist, and turn it into concrete recommendations for research and product teams.
Minimum qualifications
A PhD in a scientific or mathematical field, with a track record of original research
Demonstrated writing ability for both scientific domain and general-interest audiences, with enough understanding of how modern AI models are trained to write about them accurately.
Experience with the grants process, such as applying for and managing competitive funding, and ideally designing, reviewing, or administering funding programs
Deep engagement with frontier AI: you use these tools in your own work, understand where they're strong and where they fail, and take seriously the possibility that AI will transform every face of the scientific process within the next few years
Track record of driving multi-stakeholder projects to completion, and of coordinating people who are juggling other high-priority work. You’re resourceful, high-agency, and able to navigate ambiguity and shifting priorities.
Credibility with researchers: you can talk to scientists as a peer and understand how academic communities work, including their incentives, norms, and sensitivities
Fast learner who builds deep contextual understanding in unfamiliar scientific domains and can contribute meaningfully to discussions with researchers outside your own field.
Preferred qualifications
Experience as a program officer, program director, or fellowship lead at a science funder, research agency, or philanthropy
Published science writing in outlets such as Quanta, Scientific American, or Physics Today, or a substantial public writing presence such as a blog or newsletter
Research experience that uses AI or ML methods, or that involves building scientific software, tools, or datasets
Experience building partnerships with scientific societies, journals, or research institutions
Familiarity with AI safety and responsible deployment, including dual-use considerations in fields like biology
Experience organizing conferences, workshops, or large coordinated launches
