Sr Software Engineer - Mobile (React Native)
The Role You'll Play
You'll build and evolve cross-platform mobile experiences at Playlist with React Native, shipping customer-facing features to iOS and Android across our consumer apps, from the interface down through networking and on-device data layers. You'll partner closely with Product, Design, and QA to take ideas from concept to production with high quality, reliability, and strong UX. You'll also operate at the edge of what's possible by leveraging AI (LLMs and agentic tooling) to accelerate delivery, improve quality, and push product capabilities forward.
Partner with Product and Design to deliver features from ideation through App Store and Play Store release, iterating based on feedback and outcomes
Own mobile features end-to-end across iOS and Android: UI, state and view logic, client networking, local persistence, and production rollout
Build polished, accessible interfaces in React Native with a strong focus on performance, responsiveness, and UX quality on both platforms
Design and integrate client-side networking against GraphQL/REST APIs, collaborating on schemas, contracts, authentication, and authorization
Build reliable data flows on device: persistence, caching, background tasks, offline support, and sync
Drive engineering excellence and operational health through automated testing, thoughtful code reviews, and strong crash reporting and observability, strengthening logging, error handling, resilience, and release readiness while identifying risks early
Use AI effectively to move faster without sacrificing correctness: AI-assisted debugging, test generation, accessibility checks, refactors, and design/UX iteration
Help foster a collaborative team culture that values autonomy, accountability, and impact
What We're Looking For
5+ years building and shipping cross-platform mobile applications with React Native for large-scale consumer or SaaS products
Strong proficiency with TypeScript and JavaScript, including strong fundamentals in the language and ecosystem
Deep experience with modern React Native, including the New Architecture (Fabric, TurboModules, JSI) and the Hermes engine, plus core React patterns (hooks, composition, state management, render performance)
Experience with the Expo toolchain (Expo Router, EAS Build/Submit/Update) or comparable bare-workflow and native build setups
Solid experience shipping to both iOS and Android, including an understanding of platform differences and when to drop down to native code
Comfort writing or maintaining native modules and bridging to native code (Swift/Objective-C, Kotlin/Java) when the situation calls for it
Experience consuming GraphQL APIs (schema-driven development, client caching, pagination patterns) and/or well-designed REST APIs, including client data-fetching patterns (e.g., TanStack Query)
Solid understanding of on-device persistence (e.g., AsyncStorage, MMKV, SQLite, WatermelonDB, or Realm), offline-first patterns, and networked-client fundamentals (timeouts/retries, idempotency, offline handling, graceful degradation)
Familiarity with app architecture patterns (MVVM, TCA, or similar) and modular, testable codebases
Solid debugging skills; comfortable using Xcode Instruments (Time Profiler, Allocations, Leaks) and the Xcode debugger
Experience with testing across the stack: unit, integration, and UI (e.g., XCTest, XCUITest, snapshot testing)
Experience with the release pipeline: App Store Connect, TestFlight, code signing, and provisioning
Clear communicator who collaborates effectively across roles and working styles
AI-native builder mindset with strong ownership and judgment: leverage AI to amplify output and quality, and bring (or quickly build) experience with AI-adjacent systems like evals, guardrails, prompt/tool design, and agentic workflows
Tools and systems
This role is cross-platform mobile with React Native, with ownership across product experiences, client services, and on-device data. You do not need to have used every tool here, but you should be comfortable learning new technologies and choosing the right approach for the problem.
Languages: TypeScript, JavaScript, with Swift/Objective-C and Kotlin/Java for native modules
Framework & UI: React Native (New Architecture, Hermes), Expo/Expo Router, React Navigation, Reanimated, Gesture Handler, NativeWind/styled-components, design tokens/component libraries, accessibility
State & data: Redux Toolkit/Zustand/Jotai, TanStack Query, GraphQL (e.g., Apollo Client) and/or REST, AsyncStorage/MMKV/SQLite/WatermelonDB, secure storage (Keychain/Keystore)
Runtime & tooling: Metro, Hermes, Xcode, Android Studio, Gradle, CocoaPods, monorepos (Nx/Turborepo), CI/CD
Testing: unit/integration/e2e testing (Jest, React Native Testing Library, Detox/Maestro) plus native unit/UI tests
Release & distribution: EAS Build/Submit/Update, Fastlane, App Store Connect, Google Play Console, TestFlight, over-the-air updates (Expo Updates/CodePush), code signing, provisioning
Observability: crash reporting and monitoring (Sentry/Crashlytics/New Relic or similar), React Native DevTools/Flipper, performance profiling
AI/LLM tooling & quality/safety: Cursor/Copilot-style IDE assistants; Claude Code/Codex-style CLI assistants; MCPs; tool/function calling; agent frameworks; prompt/version management; evals; regression suites; hallucination/guardrail strategies; and data/privacy considerations
Engineering Practices: automated testing, code reviews, CI/CD, observability, on-call, incident management, with AI-accelerated workflows where appropriate
