About 10Pearls
We are 10Pearls, an award-winning digital development company, that helps businesses with product design, development, and technology acceleration. We are looking for a consultative, creative professional who wants to flex their admin muscles using all the latest and greatest the platform has to offer to help us take our current implementation to the next level.
We are looking for a Senior Java Engineer to serve as a technical anchor for a high-impact, greenfield platform development initiative. This role will focus on designing and implementing complex backend systems using Java and Kotlin with Spring Boot in an AWS-native environment.
The ideal candidate combines strong hands-on engineering expertise with senior-level judgment in systems design, distributed architectures, API contracts, integration, security, and production reliability. You will work closely with the Project Lead and multiple engineering teams to translate high-level architectural direction into scalable, production-ready services.
The engineering team also uses AI coding agents as a standard part of the production development workflow. Engineers are expected to use these tools effectively while independently validating generated code, particularly around correctness, security, API contracts, edge cases, and architectural decisions.
Responsibilities:
Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services using Java, Kotlin, and Spring Boot, deployed within an AWS-native architecture.
Design and implement high-throughput distributed systems, including idempotent and auditable event-processing components capable of supporting large production workloads.
Design, model, and optimize MySQL / Aurora RDS schemas, indexes, queries, and data-access patterns for high-volume transactional systems.
Design and maintain application infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) practices and modern provisioning tools.
Define and maintain engineering standards for Java and Kotlin Spring Boot applications, including architecture, maintainability, testing, and code quality.
Own and conduct high-quality code reviews, establishing a rigorous standard for correctness, reliability, security, and maintainability before code is merged.
Design and manage REST API contracts and integration interfaces between new services, existing platforms, and systems owned by other engineering teams.
Implement and secure machine-to-machine authentication across distributed services using technologies such as JWT, OAuth, AWS Cognito, KMS, and IAM.
Collaborate with other engineering teams to negotiate API, interface, and scope changes, driving technical decisions through pull request, review, release, and deployment processes.
Build comprehensive automated tests and verify system behavior through execution, ensuring that implementations match expected production behavior and identifying discrepancies between documentation and live systems.
Break down complex delivery initiatives into clearly specified, independently executable engineering workstreams and produce technical specifications that other engineers can implement against.
Instrument applications and distributed systems for observability, metrics, tracing, alerting, troubleshooting, and production validation, while also contributing to React and TypeScript applications when backend work extends into the client layer.
Requirements:
8+ years of professional software engineering experience, including at least 5 years building and operating production JVM services.
Advanced hands-on proficiency in both Java and Kotlin, with the ability to develop and review production-quality code confidently in either language.
Expert-level experience with Spring Boot, including practical knowledge of both Spring Boot 2.7 and 3.x and the differences between these generations.
Strong AWS-native engineering experience with technologies such as ECS Fargate, API Gateway, Aurora/RDS, Redis, SQS or Kinesis, S3, Cognito, KMS, and IAM.
Solid experience with Infrastructure as Code, using tools such as Terraform, AWS CDK, Pulumi, or CloudFormation.
Strong experience designing REST APIs, defining service contracts, and implementing machine-to-machine authentication using JWT, OAuth, Cognito, or equivalent technologies.
Advanced production experience with MySQL, including schema design, indexing strategies, query optimization, and performance tuning under sustained write workloads.
