Your opportunity

At New Relic, we provide our customers real-time insights so they can innovate faster. Our software delivers insightful observability tools across different technologies and distributed systems, enabling software engineering teams to quickly identify, understand, and tackle issues, analyze performance, and get the most out of their software and infrastructure. This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of observability while pioneering the next generation of engineering: we are actively revolutionizing how we build software by embedding modern, agent-powered workflows directly into our daily development lifecycle. You’ll tackle complex distributed systems problems while helping drive internal innovation on the frontlines of AI-assisted engineering.

About the team

This position is for the Service Architecture Intelligence team. You will be building, improving, and maintaining a distributed service architecture capable of ingesting large volumes of data, analyzing spans and traces, and publishing them downstream so the UI can offer an exceptional experience to our customers.

We work with data at scale, and our pipeline is built with a diverse tech stack (Java, Kafka, Redis, public cloud services, and more). You will work alongside a team of talented engineers solving complex distributed systems challenges. If you're passionate about performance and scale, and want to contribute to one of the largest and fastest-growing observability platforms while co-creating the future of AI-driven development workflows, we want to hear from you.

We are remote-first, with team members distributed across several locations, but we have a strong presence in Barcelona and we often take advantage of our lovely offices.

What you'll do

Build, maintain, and scale backend services and their support tools using modern engineering practices.

Pioneer, test, and integrate advanced AI agents and AI-powered workflows into everyday engineering operations; from code generation and automated testing to architecture planning, code reviews, and production troubleshooting.

Work closely with product and sibling teams to understand product specifications and influence the roadmap for the Service Architecture Intelligence products at New Relic.

Create automation and tooling to make our systems more scalable, easier to deploy.

Work in an agile environment with a DevOps approach, where teams build and maintain their own software, including participating in on-call rotations.

Champion continuous workflow innovation by evaluating emerging AI agent capabilities and helping set the standard for team-wide adoption.

Embrace a culture of technical excellence, continuous learning, and shared knowledge.

This role requires

Experience with distributed systems, concurrency, and scaling in production environments.

Strong experience writing software in OOP languages (Java is a must) and comfort adapting to different languages and frameworks.

Familiarity with asynchronous programming techniques: streams, event-based flows, task queues, and message queues.

Active experience using, integrating, and mastering modern AI coding assistants and AI agents in your engineering workflow, alongside a clear mindset of continuous workflow innovation.

Comfort working in a fast-paced environment focused on delivering high-quality production code at a regular cadence using Agile methodologies.

A collaborative work style that includes colleagues in important decisions and leads to shared code ownership.

Adaptability in a rapidly changing industry and a proactive drive to push the boundaries of modern software tools.

Proficiency in English.

Bonus points if you have

Proven experience evaluating, benchmarking, or developing custom agentic AI tools, prompt workflows, or developer automation scripts.

Contributions to open source projects.

Deep understanding of the value that build and test automation brings to development team efficiency and reliability, with a passion for applying these techniques.

Experience setting up and managing observability tools.

Experience in technical mentorship and supporting colleagues' skill development.

Please note that visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
