Senior Tax Manager
ABOUT THE ROLE
Bitvavo is one of Europe's leading digital asset platforms, serving millions of customers from our Amsterdam headquarters under the EU's MiCAR framework. As the business continues to grow, our organisational structure is evolving, with a technology platform built almost entirely in house in the Netherlands at the heart of everything we do.
You will be Bitvavo's first dedicated tax hire, responsible for the organisation's tax affairs end to end, covering corporate income tax, VAT, transfer pricing and wage related incentives. As the organisation continues to evolve, you make sure the tax position is correct, well documented and consistent, and you build the in house tax function to keep it that way.
You will start as a one person team, with the finance function supporting you on calculations and reconciliation, and business control and other functions available whenever additional support is needed. This gives you the opportunity to shape the function from the ground up, with the potential to grow a team as your impact and the business grow.
In addition to managing the organisation's tax affairs, you will play a key role in shaping Bitvavo's tax strategy, ensuring the business grows in a tax-efficient and sustainable manner across jurisdictions and product offerings. You will provide strategic tax structuring advice on corporate initiatives, international expansion, intercompany arrangements and new business models, balancing commercial objectives, regulatory requirements and tax risk management.
Bitvavo already holds WBSO coverage and an innovation box settlement agreement with the Belastingdienst. Keeping both current as the organisation grows, and renewing and extending them where warranted, is a core part of the role.
WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING
- Own the organisation's corporate income tax position, including Dutch fiscal unity (corporate income tax and VAT), participation exemption and interest deduction rules
- Lead the tax assessment and structuring of strategic business initiatives, new products, international expansion projects and corporate transactions, ensuring tax risks are identified early and tax outcomes are aligned with commercial objectives
- Maintain the transfer pricing framework, ensuring intercompany services, financing and licensing are priced at arm's length and aligned with where people, functions and risks actually sit, with master file, local files and benchmarks kept up to date
- Partner with Legal, Finance and Business teams to review organisational structures, intercompany arrangements and key contracts, ensuring they reflect the intended tax position, comply with transfer pricing policies and support Bitvavo's long-term operating model.
- Manage the VAT position of a largely exempt financial organisation, covering grouping, recovery and the correct treatment of intra group and cross border services
- Own the existing WBSO and innovation box positions, including the annual WBSO cycle across the development organisation, the profit attribution analysis, and the renewal of the settlement agreement (vaststellingsovereenkomst) with the Belastingdienst
- Be Bitvavo's face to the Belastingdienst and, with local counsel, to relevant tax authorities, covering filings, rulings and advance certainty, audits and the ongoing relationship, built on transparency and a documentation standard that holds up over time
- Own the organisation's obligations under Pillar Two, DAC6, DAC8 and withholding tax rules, and monitor relevant legislative developments
- Build the function, including selecting and managing external advisers and the tax budget, and establishing a tax control framework appropriate for a regulated financial organisation
WHAT YOU WILL BRING
- At least 8 years of relevant experience in Dutch and cross-border tax, ideally gained within a Big 4 firm, a specialized law practice, or as a senior in-house professional; a mix is ideal
- A proven track record of managing relationships with the Belastingdienst, specifically in securing innovation box agreements, tax rulings, or other formal advance certainty
- Advanced technical proficiency in Dutch CIT, transfer pricing methodologies for complex intercompany structures, and VAT considerations for exempt financial services
- Familiarity with the regulated financial landscape, including the impact of licensing, substance, and capital requirements on tax structuring
- The analytical precision to develop robust, well-documented tax positions and maintain their consistency throughout a growing organization
- Excellent communication abilities to translate technical tax matters into clear strategic guidance for boards and authoritative dialogue with inspectors
- Fluency in English and Dutch is mandatory for this role, combined with a strong interest in fintech and digital assets; a technical mindset is essential
