Senior Software Engineer
Compensation: $190,000 - 250,000/year
Team & Position Details:
Virtru protects data wherever it travels, for customers ranging from commercial enterprises to the Department of Defense, the Intelligence Community, Law Enforcement, and Federal Civilian agencies. Many of these customers run Virtru inside their mission environments, and the most sensitive of those environments are cleared spaces where work happens on site, alongside the customer's own engineers.
As a Senior Software Engineer in the Delivery Engineering organization, you'd be helping to build a founder team focused on making these deployments simple, easy, and fast. You will be the engineer who builds what a cleared customer needs and cannot get from the product alone: custom integrations and policy enforcement points (the components that enforce access policy inside a customer's application) delivered into the customer's environment. You will sit with customer engineers, understand how their systems really work, and ship working software that fits them.
You will work directly with deployment engineers and forward deployed engineers on the customer side of each engagement, with QA to prove what you build before it ships, and with our product engineering and Platform Engineering counterparts to carry what you learn back into the product. The test of your work is simple: the second time we face the same customer need, we should be configuring something you built, not writing it again.
The impact of this role is company and product wide, heavily enabling our goals to scale Virtru, partner, and customer led deployments non-linearly without having to throw more humans at the problem. You'll be expected to come up with AI-native design patterns that will increase our velocity without compromising our high bar for quality and security. The right candidate is excited about working on a small, nimble, highly autonomous and empowered team where everyone is expected to make high judgement, high velocity decisions independently and with urgency. If you want a role where the connection between what you build and what the customer achieves requires no explaining, this is one.
As a Senior Software Engineer in Delivery Engineering, your responsibilities will include:
Build custom integrations and policy enforcement points for cleared customers, scoped against a statement of work, tested with QA, and delivered into environments Virtru does not operate.
Work directly with customer engineers inside cleared environments to understand their systems, agree what will be built, and explain your design to their security team.
Turn what you build twice into a reusable asset. When a second customer needs the same thing, the first build becomes a template, a library, or a tool that deployment engineers and forward deployed engineers can use without you.
Build on the SDKs and APIs that our product engineering teams maintain, and bring gaps and defects back to them with a clear reproduction and a documented outcome.
Write code that follows the engineering standard set by Delivery Engineering's Principal Software Engineer, and submit your work to the design review that standard calls for.
Package your work so it installs, upgrades, and runs in disconnected environments with no path to the internet.
Partner with deployment engineers and forward deployed engineers so the person who installs your work in the field has what they need: documentation, test evidence, and a clear way to report back.
Partner with our Platform Engineering counterparts on how your work is built, signed, and released.
Use AI coding agents as part of your daily workflow, and help the team learn which patterns raise quality and speed together.
Mentor and learn from peers across the organization, and help define what good looks like for customer-facing engineering at Virtru.
This role may require travel up to 25% of the time.
Skills that will help you thrive in this role:
Must haves
An active TS/SCI US security clearance. This role will work in classified environments at least 25% of the time.
You have built and shipped production software. You have owned code from design through release and maintenance, in a language and stack you can discuss in depth, and you can show us what you built and what you would do differently.
You can explain a design to a skeptical government security team. You can take a customer's security reviewers through what your software does, what it touches, and why it is safe to run, and you can answer the follow-up questions.
Nice to haves
Windows and .NET depth: production .NET on Windows, including Windows Services, signed installers, and managed distribution. Many of our customers' end-user environments are Windows-heavy, and some of our policy enforcement points deploy on Windows client endpoints.
Go proficiency, which is what the Data Security Platform and OpenTDF are written in.
Kubernetes experience, including packaging and running software across more than one distribution.
Identity and authorization integration experience: OIDC, SAML, and attribute-based access control (ABAC).
Familiarity with Zero Trust security architecture and concepts such as Policy Enforcement and Decision Points, cryptography, and identity.
Experience delivering software into air-gapped or disconnected environments.
Experience building with AI coding agents.
Where this role may not be a fit
Wanting a product-only role with no customer contact. Much of this job is working next to the customer, in their environment, on their problem. If you prefer to build away from customers, this role may not be for you.
Inability to earn trust and credibility with partners and customers. You may be the person who has to explain to a skeptical government security team why our software is safe, or to an internal VP of Engineering why we need to prioritize critical platform features. Those have to be conversations you are willing and excited to have.
Virtruvian qualities that will set you up for success:
Thinking outside of the box to respectfully challenge your teammates and managers in the pursuit of excellence
Strong sense of urgency with an action-oriented mindset
Able to collaborate and adapt to shifting priorities as business needs evolve
Comfortable with asynchronous communication including slack, email, zoom, etc.
