Senior Product Designer - Growth
ABOUT THE ROLE
Render’s mission is simple: eliminate the tedious work of building software by providing a cloud platform that just works.
We’re evolving from the go-to platform for solo developers into the backbone for fast-scaling teams. This role sits at the heart of that shift: how a developer discovers Render, achieves their first success, and becomes a paying customer whose bill makes sense to them. That journey spans onboarding and activation, billing, payments, and pricing — the moments where trust is won or lost and where good design directly moves the business. Because the journey crosses the whole product, you won’t be siloed on a single team; you’ll work across the groups that own these surfaces — product, billing, and more — following the work wherever it leads.
This is a craft-focused IC role built for speed, scale, and variety. You won’t polish one screen for a month; you’ll ship a lot, learn fast, and raise the bar across a wide surface. The craft bar is high — this is still Render, where details matter — but here it’s expressed through velocity: designs that ship, get measured, and compound. You’ll move between a pricing page, an upgrade flow, an onboarding step, and a billing surface in the same week, and hold all of them to the same standard.
What makes this work hard and interesting: these surfaces are deceptively high-stakes. A confusing bill erodes trust as fast as a failed deploy. A pricing page that misleads costs real money and goodwill. Payments and billing are where correctness, clarity, and edge-case rigor matter as much as polish — and where “the unglamorous flow” is the product.
You’ll join a design team that takes its craft seriously, with weekly critiques and deep cross-functional collaboration. You’ll thrive here if you love fast, measurable work, hold a high bar under velocity, and want your design decisions grounded in what real users do — not just what looks good in Figma or an AI prototype.
YOU WILL:
Design the journey from first touch to paying customer as one connected system. Onboarding, activation, upgrade, and billing aren’t separate surfaces; they’re one path a developer walks. You’ll design them to feel coherent, so the moment someone decides to pay is the natural next step, not a cliff.
Own billing, payments, and pricing as craft surfaces. Plans, usage, invoices, upgrade and downgrade flows, payment methods, dunning, and the pricing page itself. This is where clarity and correctness are the whole game — a developer should always understand what they’re paying for and why, and never be surprised. You’ll bring real rigor to the edge cases (failed charges, proration, usage spikes) that make or break trust.
Design a first-run and activation experience worth recommending. The path from signup to first successful deploy — and from first deploy to habit — is where growth starts. You’ll design it so that a developer’s first ten minutes make them want to tell someone, and so the steps that drive activation are clear, fast, and friendly.
Run on validation and experimentation together. You’ll put work in front of real users — testing, interviews, quick validation — and ship experiments to learn what actually moves activation, conversion, and retention. You’re fluent in both: you know when a question needs a user session and when it needs an A/B test, and you treat shipped data as how design decisions get earned, not decoration.
Move fast across a wide surface. This role trades depth-on-one-thing for range: you’ll prioritize ruthlessly, ship in small confident increments, and know which details matter now and which can wait. Speed is a feature here.
Partner across the company. Growth design lives at the intersection of product, engineering, data, marketing, and finance. You’ll communicate clearly and often, align fast-moving stakeholders, and make the case for the user inside business conversations about pricing and revenue.
Contribute to where Growth goes next. Alongside the shipping work, you’ll bring a point of view and concept explorations to the team’s design-led discovery track, through our weekly critique cadence.
WE’RE LOOKING FOR:
5+ years of relevant experience, including real work designing for developers or technical users. You’ve designed products for software engineers, not just adjacent to them — in developer tools, cloud infrastructure, APIs, or another technical product — ideally paired with growth, billing, or payments depth. We care more about your impact than your title, but designing for a technical audience isn’t optional here.
Exceptional taste and craft at speed. You have an eye for detail that borders on obsessive, and you can bring it to work that ships fast. You know how to hold a high bar without over-polishing, and you’ve shipped work that other practitioners admire.
Fluency in both validation and experimentation. You’re comfortable running user testing and interviews and designing and reading experiments. You know which question each one answers, and you let real user behavior — not just instinct — shape your work.
Rigor with complex, high-stakes flows. Billing, payments, and pricing reward people who sweat the edge cases. You design for the failed charge, the plan change mid-cycle, the confusing invoice — not just the happy path. You believe a clear bill is as much a design artifact as a beautiful dashboard.
Strong information architecture. You can take a tangle of plans, usage, and states and make it feel like one obvious thing.
You design the whole journey, not a screen at a time. Your portfolio shows a user journey that’s coherent from first touch through activation to paying — not a set of polished screens that don’t add up.
Fluent in how developers think and get billed. You design for a technical user’s real mental model — services, deploys, and how developers actually work. Bonus if you understand usage-based, resource-metered billing for developer tools: compute plans, CPU/memory instance types (e.g., 1c-2g), usage metering, and how pricing maps to the underlying infrastructure. You don’t need to have built a cloud platform, but you’re curious enough to get into the weeds.
Strong product judgment under fast launch velocity. You frame problems well, prioritize ruthlessly, and know which details matter and which can wait.
Clear, direct communication and a genuinely collaborative way of working with product, engineering, data, and finance partners — including sharing a problem space with another designer without needing hard fences between you.
NICE-TO-HAVES:
- Experience designing billing, payments, subscriptions, checkout, or pricing surfaces where correctness and clarity are high-stakes.
- A track record of growth wins you can point to: activation, conversion, or retention you measurably moved.
- Comfort with experimentation, tooling, and reading data yourself, rather than waiting on a handoff.
- Design-engineering literacy: comfort near code, motion, or prototyping, and curiosity about AI-assisted design.
- Writing, talks, or side projects that demonstrate your craft and point of view.
