Senior Power BI Engineer

About the Project

We are looking for an experienced Senior Data / BI Engineers to support a project focused on reviewing, optimizing, and modernizing an existing Business Intelligence (BI) stack.

The current environment includes PostgreSQL, AWS Glue, Amazon Redshift, and Power BI. The goal is to improve data freshness, optimize performance and costs, and enable finance and executive teams to access reliable, consistent data through flexible, self-service reporting.

This is a hands-on engagement that combines technical assessment, solution evaluation, implementation, and knowledge transfer to the internal team.

Key Responsibilities

Review the existing BI architecture, including data ingestion pipelines, warehouse structures, queries, and Power BI reports, identifying opportunities to improve performance, reliability, and cost efficiency.

Evaluate the current technology stack and assess alternative solutions for data warehousing, ingestion, change data capture (CDC), transformation, and BI reporting.

Conduct hands-on proofs of concept to compare shortlisted solutions and provide recommendations based on cost, performance, implementation effort, and migration risk.

Optimize AWS Glue jobs and implement near-real-time data replication from PostgreSQL to Amazon Redshift while minimizing the impact on production systems.

Review and optimize Redshift schemas, data models, distribution and sort keys, workload management, and query performance.

Develop and optimize data marts for core business areas.

Review the existing Power BI reporting environment, identifying dashboards and datasets to retain, consolidate, or retire.

Build a certified Power BI semantic model with consistent definitions for core business metrics, including revenue, subscribers, and cost.

Rebuild executive dashboards using the certified model, enabling business stakeholders to explore data across dimensions such as region, product, channel, and time period.

Implement monitoring, alerting, and data quality checks to improve pipeline reliability and visibility into data freshness.

Document the architecture, data models, and operational procedures, and support knowledge transfer to the internal team.

Requirements

7+ years of experience in Data Engineering or BI Engineering, including at least two end-to-end BI stack reviews or rebuilds.

Strong hands-on experience with Amazon Redshift at scale, including data modeling, distribution and sort keys, workload management, query optimization, and cost reduction.

Solid understanding of PostgreSQL internals relevant to replication, including logical replication, WAL, replication slots, and the impact of replication on production workloads.

Production experience with AWS Glue (PySpark) and at least one change data capture (CDC) approach, such as AWS DMS, zero-ETL integration, or Debezium.

Strong Power BI experience, including semantic models, DAX, star schemas, refresh modes, row-level security, and managing large reporting environments.

Experience working with multiple data warehouse and BI platforms, with the ability to evaluate alternatives and recommend the right solution based on business and technical requirements.

Strong SQL and Python skills.

Experience delivering measurable improvements in data freshness, query performance, infrastructure costs, or reporting capabilities.

Strong communication and documentation skills, with the ability to explain technical trade-offs to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Availability for an overlap with US Pacific Time.Nice to Have

Experience with dbt or similar data transformation and testing frameworks.

Experience with Terraform or equivalent infrastructure-as-code tools.

Familiarity with data quality tools such as Great Expectations, Soda, or AWS Glue Data Quality.

AWS Data Engineer – Associate, Microsoft PL-300, DP-600, or equivalent certifications.

Experience in subscription-based businesses or consumer-device industries, particularly with subscriber and churn metrics.
