About the client

Our client is a leading European online car marketplace, connecting car buyers and sellers across the continent. The platform serves over 30 million monthly users and operates across 18 countries, making it one of the largest and most trusted digital marketplaces for vehicles in Europe.

About the role

We are looking for a hands-on Observability / SRE Engineer with strong AWS infrastructure and networking skills to lead a focused, time-boxed migration of the monitoring setup for one application from New Relic to Grafana. You will be embedded in the client's engineering team, while owning the migration end to end and working independently as the sole engineer on this scope.

This is a short-term engagement with a clear deliverable. We value someone who can ramp up quickly, use modern AI-assisted tooling to move faster, communicate proactively with the team, and leave behind a clean, well-documented monitoring setup.

Responsibilities

Assess the existing New Relic monitoring setup for the in-scope application, including dashboards, alerts, SLIs/SLOs, synthetic checks, and log and trace usage.

Define the migration approach and map New Relic constructs to their Grafana-stack equivalents (Grafana, Prometheus, Loki, Tempo or similar).

Rebuild dashboards and alert rules in Grafana, validating that coverage and alert quality match or improve on the current state.

Instrument and configure the application and its AWS infrastructure (such as compute, containers, load balancers, and managed services) to send metrics, logs, and traces to the new platform, using OpenTelemetry where applicable.

Set up and validate secure network connectivity between AWS workloads and the Grafana stack, including VPC routing, security groups, VPC endpoints or PrivateLink, and DNS, and troubleshoot connectivity and data-flow issues.

Run the old and new monitoring in parallel, verify data accuracy, and manage a safe cutover with minimal risk to production visibility; integrate and tune alerting with the team's incident and notification channels.

Use AI-assisted development tools, including Codex, to improve engineering productivity and delivery speed, for example to translate queries, generate dashboards and configuration as code, and draft documentation, while reviewing and validating all output.

Document the new setup, hand over knowledge to the team with runbooks, and keep stakeholders informed with regular progress updates and early risk flags.

Requirements

5+ years of experience in DevOps, SRE, or observability engineering, ideally in a high-traffic, cloud-based production environment.

Strong hands-on experience with Grafana, including dashboard design, alerting, and data source configuration.

Practical experience with New Relic (APM, dashboards, NRQL, alert policies) and a clear understanding of how to translate it to other tools.

Experience with Prometheus (PromQL), log and trace tooling such as Loki, Tempo, or the ELK stack, and OpenTelemetry instrumentation.

Solid hands-on experience with AWS infrastructure, such as EC2, EKS/ECS, IAM, CloudWatch, and S3, and with Infrastructure as Code (e.g., Terraform).

Strong understanding of AWS networking, including VPC design, subnets, routing, security groups, load balancers, VPC endpoints/PrivateLink, and DNS (Route 53).

Practical experience using AI-assisted development tools, such as Codex, in day-to-day engineering work.

Proven ability to work independently and deliver within a tight timeline, with availability to work full-time within Canadian time zone hours and start on short notice.

Excellent verbal and written English skills.

Nice to have

Experience with Grafana Cloud or Grafana Mimir.

Previous monitoring or observability tool migration projects.

Experience defining SLIs/SLOs and error budgets.

AWS certification (e.g., Solutions Architect, DevOps Engineer, or Advanced Networking)

NB! Working hours according to the Canadian Timezone, Monday to Friday - availability during these hours is mandatory.

NB2! The role is planned as an initial 3-month engagement, with the opportunity to continue beyond this period depending on the project’s needs and progress.
