Senior Backend Engineer

We at 10Pearls are looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join a globally distributed engineering team responsible for building and operating scalable, production-grade backend services. This is a hands-on engineering role for someone who brings strong technical expertise along with an end-to-end ownership mindset. You will design, build, deploy, monitor, and support the services you develop while contributing to architectural decisions and engineering standards across the team.

Location: Remote — Costa Rica, Peru, Honduras, Guatemala, and Mexico only

Responsibilities

Design, develop, and operate Java-based backend services and microservices.

Build and maintain cloud-native applications running on AWS and Kubernetes/EKS.

Own services throughout their full lifecycle, from technical design and development through deployment, monitoring, troubleshooting, and production support.

Design reliable and scalable solutions within a distributed microservices architecture.

Work with DynamoDB, SQS, and other AWS services supporting distributed and asynchronous workloads.

Implement and maintain monitoring, logging, and observability using tools such as DataDog and Splunk.

Troubleshoot production issues, perform root-cause analysis, and drive incidents through resolution.

Participate in a shared on-call rotation supporting production services.

Contribute to architecture discussions, technical decisions, code quality, and engineering best practices.

Collaborate asynchronously with engineers and partner teams across multiple countries and time zones.

Skills and Requirements

7+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a strong focus on backend development.

Advanced hands-on experience with Java and production-grade backend systems.

Strong experience with AWS and cloud-native application development.

Hands-on experience with Kubernetes/EKS or equivalent container orchestration technologies.

Proven experience designing, building, and operating microservices and distributed systems at scale.

Experience with NoSQL databases, ideally DynamoDB or equivalent.

Experience with messaging and asynchronous architectures, ideally SQS or comparable technologies.

Experience with production monitoring and observability tools, such as DataDog, Splunk, or equivalent.

Demonstrated experience owning production services, including incident response and on-call support.

Ability to contribute to system design and architectural decisions at a senior engineering level.

Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and written communication skills.

Ability to work effectively in a distributed and asynchronous engineering environment with a high degree of autonomy.

Must be currently based in Costa Rica, Peru, Honduras, Guatemala, or Mexico.
