Lead Algorithm Solutions Engineer
Are you driven to build cutting edge solutions for the nation’s technology needs?
At STR, we’re developing advanced capabilities that create a lasting impact on national security, gaining an edge on the unseen adversary through technology dominance.
About the Team:
STR’s Intelligence division researches and develops advanced analytics and machine learning-based solutions to solve challenging problems related to national security. Our team consists of passionate and motivated engineers with advanced degrees in engineering, computer science, mathematics and beyond, using their deep technical knowledge and creativity to tackle some of the hardest problems that our customers face. Our projects span different data modalities and incorporate advanced algorithms such as latest in reinforcement agent policy learning, transformer-based information distillation, and AI/ML computer vision solutions. These algorithms operate under challenging constraints not typically found in the commercial world, imparting impact that only our group can deliver to the intelligence community.
The Role:
In the Lead Algorithm Solutions Engineer role, you will leverage your skills in software development and machine learning to develop, implement, and evaluate AI/ML algorithms to make sense of information present in large and/or challenging datasets deployed to the cloud and at the edge. You will support fast-moving research groups solving the hardest problems, creating and preventing technological surprise while simultaneously supporting the immediate integration of your best solutions into real-world applications such as in-the-wild video-based object reidentification, foundation models for overhead imagery, and automatic target recognition in complex imagery.
This position is based in Arlington, VA, Woburn, MA, or Dayton, OH.
What you will do:
Develop and optimize algorithm solutions for a wide variety of challenging needs spanning computer vision, 3D modeling, data fusion of multi-modal sensor data, and in-the-wild open set recognition and identification in imagery
Collaborate across small multi-disciplinary teams of researchers and transition-focused engineers as well as academic partners to deliver cutting-edge impact
Support software solutions deployed across cloud and edge-capable devices and environments using your algorithms
Who you are:
Motivated collaborator who takes pride in the craftsmanship of their solutions and demonstrates strong ownership throughout the lifecycle of development
Excellent communicator and briefer, who is comfortable communicating with both technical and non-technical audiences
Ability to implement and evaluate novel prototype solutions, and work with a team to mature promising prototypes into operational capabilities
Strong proficiency in python and demonstrated ability to generate clean, high quality code both with and without coding tools
Familiarity with software development best practices, including version control (Git) and Agile workflow methodologies
BS Degree in a scientific field such as Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science, or Physics with 8+ years of relevant experience. Equivalent experience will be considered.
Ability to obtain a security clearance, for which U.S citizenship is need by the U.S government
Even Better:
Understanding of a range of machine learning methods and implementation, such as the latest in vision transformer technology, use and finetuning of foundation models under self-supervised or semi-self-supervised conditions, vision language models as applied to agentic training, or large-scale object reassociation in video or sparse re-visit imagery
Experienced in leading and directing research initiatives from inception to functional prototypes
Experience working in a large cross-functional, distributed team
Experience with US Government software accreditation processes
Active security clearance
