Internal Communications Lead, Enterprise & Growth
ABOUT THE TEAM
OpenAI’s mission is to ensure that AGI benefits all of humanity.
Our Communications team supports OpenAI’s mission and goals by clearly and authentically explaining our technology, values, and approach to safely building powerful AI. The Internal Communications team aims to create clarity, trust, and shared understanding that inspires our employees to do their best work. We partner across the company to craft clear, compelling narratives about what’s being built, why it matters, how it aligns to our strategy, and most importantly, how it advances our mission.
ABOUT THE ROLE
We are looking for an experienced internal communications leader to own the strategy for our Enterprise & Growth portfolio, spanning B2B, Revenue, Partnerships, Marketing, Enterprise Engineering, Ads, Commerce, and Consumer Verticals. These teams are changing how businesses operate, bringing AI into working life, and expanding access to its benefits. This work is central to our mission of ensuring AGI benefits all of humanity: helping people and businesses everywhere put AI to use in ways that improve their lives and livelihoods.
You will have the opportunity to work closely with executives to help employees understand where the business is going, why decisions are being made, and how their work ladders up. You will draw on a deep understanding of the teams you support and leverage strong relationships across the company to shape the communications approach and deliver the writing and programs that bring it to life.
A central part of this role is helping employees understand how our technology reaches people and businesses – and what we learn when they use it. You will bring user and customer experiences into companywide conversations, help employees understand the products and capabilities we’re building for businesses and the problems they solve, and help leaders communicate through rapid growth and change.
We’re looking for someone with sharp editorial instincts, boundless creative ambition, and the sound judgment to handle sensitive, confidential, and consequential work with care. You should be equally comfortable setting the communications direction, writing an executive message that addresses what’s on employees’ minds directly and transparently, and hosting a live conversation that invites candid questions and open discussion.
OpenAI is a unique and fast-moving working environment. Priorities can shift quickly, and important work often begins before every detail is settled. You will often need to get up to speed on unfamiliar topics, recommend a path with incomplete information, and adjust as decisions evolve. We’re looking for a pro who takes initiative, understands what matters to employees, and anticipates tough questions and pain points early enough to help leaders address them.
This role can be based in San Francisco or New York City. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees.
IN THIS ROLE, YOU WILL:
- Set and deliver the communications strategy for Enterprise & Growth. Understand the portfolio’s priorities, identify where communications can make a difference, and lead programs from initial recommendation through execution and evaluation.
- Advise senior leaders and shape their communications. Develop leadership updates, narratives, and presentations. Offer clear recommendations on framing, timing, and delivery, holding a high bar for accuracy, clarity, and transparency with employees.
- Guide communications through complex and sensitive changes. Develop plans for leadership transitions, organizational changes, and evolving business priorities. Work with People, Legal, External Comms, and XFN partners to explain decisions, prepare leadership, and address questions employees are likely to have.
- Lead company-wide user and customer storytelling. Build programs that show how people and organizations use our technology, how it benefits them, and what employees can learn from their experiences. Develop creative formats that bring these stories to life, encourage engagement, and spark new ideas for what we could build next.
- Bring employee perspectives into communications decisions. Synthesize questions and feedback from Slack, leadership forums, and other channels. Help leaders understand where employees need more context, recommend responses, and assess whether communications are improving understanding, morale, and trust.
- Keep work moving as priorities change. Move quickly, adapt as new information comes in, and keep everyone involved informed about decisions and next steps. Respond to feedback, adjust course without losing momentum, and bring a constructive, collaborative attitude to challenging moments.
- Strengthen the broader Internal Communications function. Contribute to shared priorities, provide thoughtful ideas and feedback, and turn successful approaches into practices others can use.
YOU WILL THRIVE IN THIS ROLE IF YOU HAVE:
- 10+ years of relevant experience in internal or executive communications, marketing communications, operations, or a related field, with demonstrated ownership of complex communications programs. People Management experience (1-2 years minimum) is required.
- Experience advising senior leaders. You have built trust through preparation, discretion, and thoughtful and strategic recommendations, and can navigate disagreement with confidence and utmost respect.
- Excellent writing and editorial judgment. You can explain business strategy and complicated decisions clearly, adapt to different leadership voices, and identify the details that make a message trustworthy and credible. You can produce strong work on a short timeline and incorporate detailed feedback without losing the purpose/“the why” of the message.
- Curiosity about how businesses grow and how people use technology. You can connect commercial priorities, product developments, and customer experiences to our mission and the questions and themes employees care about.
- Strong program leadership, ownership, and adaptability. You bring structure to ambiguous work and carry it through with limited direction. You can move between strategic planning and hands-on execution, learn an unfamiliar part of the business quickly, and revise your approach when new information changes the picture.
- Sound judgment and resilience under pressure. You stay constructive, collaborative, and solutions-oriented through compressed timelines, candid feedback, and changes in direction. You can rethink a draft or plan quickly, raise concerns early, and make thoughtful decisions about when to move and when to pause for more context. Your partners have deep trust in your judgment and look forward to working with you on the most challenging projects.
