About the Role
We are seeking a highly entrepreneurial and execution-oriented General Manager, Upcoming Apps Portfolio to own a portfolio of mobile applications acquired through M&A; each app is primarily generating $500,000 or less in annual EBITDA.
The GM will take newly acquired apps from transition through stabilization, engagement, monetization, and operating efficiency. These businesses may have established users, revenue, technology, or market positions, but require focused ownership to determine their long-term potential within Mode. The role will quickly determine the right path for each app: grow, maintain, reposition, consolidate, or prepare for graduation into Mode’s Emerging Apps Portfolio as it scales beyond $500,000 and demonstrates sustained growth potential.
Key Responsibilities
Portfolio Ownership & M&A Integration
Own the strategy, operating performance, and financial results of the Incubation Apps portfolio, including budgets, forecasts, KPIs, and performance targets.
Assume ownership of newly acquired apps following close; rapidly assess the product, users, revenue model, technology, costs, team needs, and market opportunity.
Develop focused post-acquisition operating plans and leverage Mode's technology, distribution, monetization capabilities, shared services, partnerships, and infrastructure to accelerate value creation.
Evaluate new apps under consideration and identify the highest-potential opportunities for investment and growth.
Growth, Product & Monetization
Drive revenue, engagement, retention, and profitability through focused product, growth, and monetization strategies.
Establish rapid experimentation and feedback loops; prioritize initiatives based on business impact, speed to learning, and ROI, scaling what works and stopping what does not.
Serve as the business owner for product direction, using analytics, market insights, competitive intelligence, and user feedback to prioritize development with Product and Engineering.
Identify opportunities across advertising, subscriptions, pricing, partnerships, cross-promotion, user acquisition, and Mode's broader ecosystem.
Portfolio Optimization & Graduation
Regularly assess each app's strategic and financial potential and determine the appropriate path: Grow, Graduate, Maintain, Reposition, or Consolidate.
Allocate resources based on performance and potential while keeping overhead low and eliminating unnecessary complexity and costs.
Develop promising apps toward graduation into the Emerging Apps portfolio and partner with the GM, Emerging Apps and executive leadership on graduation criteria and transition.
Leadership & AI-Native Execution
Serve as the clear accountable owner for the portfolio and coordinate priorities across Engineering, Product, User Acquisition, Monetization, Finance, Legal, People, and other shared services.
Communicate performance, risks, opportunities, experiments, and recommendations clearly to executive leadership and build productive relationships with stakeholders transitioning through acquisitions.
Champion an AI-Native operating approach, using AI to accelerate analysis, decision-making, experimentation, product development, automation, operating efficiency, and execution.
Create a culture of accountability, speed, thoughtful experimentation, and measurable results.
Qualifications
Strong understanding of consumer mobile apps and digital business models; experience with monetization, subscriptions, advertising, user acquisition, or consumer growth strongly preferred.
Experience integrating, operating, or scaling acquired businesses or products is highly desirable.
Hands-on operator who can move between strategy and execution, manage multiple priorities with limited resources, and work effectively with technical and cross-functional teams.
Demonstrated ability to use AI effectively in day-to-day work and identify practical applications across products, workflows, analytics, automation, and business operations.
Prior GM experience is helpful but not required; strong product, growth, strategy, or operating leadership backgrounds will be considered.
What Success Looks Like
Within the first 12 months, the General Manager will have:
Successfully transitioned newly acquired apps into Mode with clear operating plans, KPIs, and portfolio priorities.
Improved revenue, profitability, engagement, or other critical KPIs across priority apps through disciplined experimentation and AI-enabled execution.
Established clear, data-driven recommendations for where to grow, maintain, reposition, consolidate, or increase investment.
Built a repeatable, efficient incubation model and prepared qualifying apps for graduation into the Emerging Apps portfolio.
Ideal Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate is a builder, operator, and portfolio manager rather than a caretaker. They are comfortable inheriting businesses that may not have perfect processes, complete data, or dedicated resources and quickly creating clarity around what matters most.
They are commercially minded, product-oriented, highly analytical, and comfortable making decisions with incomplete information. They understand that smaller acquired apps require a different operating model than larger businesses: keep overhead low, learn quickly, test opportunities, concentrate resources behind demonstrated traction, and avoid over-investing before the economics justify it.
They also understand that incubation is not intended to be permanent. Their role is to determine the right path for each app and to build the strongest products into businesses capable of graduating into Mode's Emerging Apps portfolio.
They are AI-Native in how they work: actively using AI to increase their own leverage and expecting teams to use AI thoughtfully to move faster, operate more efficiently, improve decision-making, and uncover new product and growth opportunities.
Above all, this person takes ownership of outcomes and ensures each acquired app has a clear path toward sustainable growth, profitability, and long-term value creation.
