Gas Supply and Transport Lead, US and Canada
About AnthropicAnthropic's mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. We want AI to be safe and beneficial for our users and for society as a whole. Our team is a quickly growing group of committed researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders working together to build beneficial AI systems.
About the roleWe are hiring a Gas Supply & Transport Lead to own natural gas supply for Anthropic's non-cloud data center portfolio in the United States and Canada. Some of our campuses will run on gas-fired, behind-the-meter generation. At those sites fuel is the power supply: if gas does not arrive, in the volume and at the pressure the plant needs, the compute does not run. You will set the fuel plan for each site, contract supply and firm transportation, work with our project teams so that interconnects and laterals arrive on a schedule the fuel plan can rely on, and carry the agreements through internal approval to signature. You will work beside the teammates who originate sites and behind-the-meter generation, who contract front-of-meter power, and who schedule the portfolio once it operates. You are this function's first dedicated owner.
ResponsibilitiesOwn the fuel plan for each gas-fired site in the United States and Canada: volume and ramp, hourly swing, pressure and gas quality, supply basin and hub, the path from receipt point to plant, how firm each piece must be, and by when, set against the generation design and the site's schedule.
Test gas deliverability early in site selection and diligence: available and expandable pipeline capacity, operating pressure, constraint and curtailment history, single-pipeline exposure, and realistic timelines for new capacity. Tell site origination which sites have a real fuel path and which do not.
Structure and negotiate gas supply agreements with producers, marketers, and midstream companies, from term sheet through internal approval to signature, with legal and outside counsel: index and basis, volume flexibility, delivery point, firmness and force majeure, credit support, and term.
Secure transportation and storage: firm service on interstate, intrastate, and Canadian pipelines, open seasons and precedent agreements for expansions, capacity release, balancing and no-notice services, storage, and local distribution service where that is the only path.
Work with our project and power delivery teams, who own building the delivery infrastructure, to make sure the plans and schedules for taps, meter stations, laterals, compression, and pressure regulation are sufficient and viable for each site's fuel plan. Flag gaps early, and line up the interconnect terms with the supply and transportation agreements.
Make the fuel contracts and the power contracts fit. Work with the energy commercial leads so that fuel supply obligations, heat rate and fuel cost pass-through, force majeure, and curtailment terms in energy services and tolling agreements line up with the gas agreements behind them.
Design for fuel reliability at sites where an interruption means lost compute: second pipeline feeds, storage, backup fuel, cold-weather performance, and curtailment priority, with a plan for critical days and operational flow orders.
Collaborate with Energy Finance on price and basis exposure, and with energy scheduling and portfolio on operations. Financial hedging sits with Finance, and nominations and balancing sit with scheduling. You supply the physical position and the market view, and hand over contracts in a form that can be operated.
You may be a good fit if youHave 8+ years in natural gas midstream, pipeline commercial, gas marketing and origination, or fuel procurement for power generation, including firm transportation or long-term supply deals that you led from term sheet to signature.
Have bought gas and capacity for gas-fired generation or another large load, or have sold to those buyers and know what they should have asked for.
Know how pipelines work commercially: rate schedules, nomination cycles, imbalance and penalty provisions, operational flow orders, capacity release, and how interstate, intrastate, and Canadian regimes differ.
Know the major producing basins and trading hubs in the United States and Western Canada well enough to price basis, compare paths, and judge supply risk.
Know what it takes to get a pipeline interconnect, meter station, or lateral from first request to in-service, and what drives the schedule.
Read and mark up a base contract, a precedent agreement, and a firm transportation service agreement yourself. You use counsel well, and you do not hand them the commercial judgment.
Can build and interrogate a delivered cost of gas model yourself.
Write and speak plainly about large commitments to people outside energy, and coordinate well across teams that do not report to you.
Have built a book, a program, or a function from zero, and are comfortable moving quickly on incomplete information.
Strong candidates may also haveExperience supplying behind-the-meter, islanded, or peaking generation, where takes are not ratable and hourly flexibility matters.
Commercial experience in both the United States and Canada.
Experience on the pipeline side of an expansion or greenfield lateral, including the federal, state, or provincial approvals it needed.
Experience with trucked LNG or CNG, on-site storage, or other bridging and backup fuel arrangements.
Time on or alongside a physical gas trading or scheduling desk.
Experience with certified low-methane gas, renewable natural gas, or emissions accounting for fuel supply.
