Role Overview:
As a Staff Software Engineer I on the Pod Architecture Team, you play a key role in one of HCP’s most important engineering initiatives: evolving our core application architecture to support the company’s continued growth. You help transform a large Ruby monolith toward a more scalable and resilient architecture by evaluating and applying approaches such as service extraction, sharding, and pod- or cell-based architecture.
You dive deeply into product domains to understand their technical complexities, dependencies, and business context. You partner with engineering teams to identify appropriate architectural patterns, guide technical decisions, and support implementation through execution. Your impact extends beyond writing code as you serve as a technical advisor who helps teams navigate complex architectural tradeoffs and establish scalable solutions.
You operate effectively in a highly collaborative environment, solving complex architectural problems, navigating ambiguity and changing priorities, and influencing technical direction across teams. Through this work, you help shape HCP’s future architecture while developing broad expertise across our platform and product domains.
Our team is passionate, empathetic, hard working, and above all else focused on improving the lives of our service professionals (our Pros). Our success is their success.
Compensation: 8 200 - 9 700 USD per month (B2B)
What you do each day:
Design and implement scalable software solutions that support the evolution of HCP’s core application architecture
Evaluate architectural approaches including service extraction, sharding, and pod- or cell-based architecture based on product and platform needs
Partner with engineering teams to understand product domains, system dependencies, technical constraints, and business requirements
Guide architectural decisions and help teams evaluate tradeoffs related to scalability, reliability, performance, and maintainability
Develop technical patterns, prototypes, and implementation approaches that support architectural transformation
Collaborate with engineers, product managers, and other cross-functional partners to align architecture decisions with product and business objectives
Review code and technical designs and provide actionable guidance that strengthens engineering quality and consistency
Troubleshoot complex system issues and identify root causes across interconnected applications and services
Document architectural decisions, patterns, dependencies, and technical guidance to enable adoption across engineering teams
Mentor engineers and share architectural expertise that strengthens technical capabilities across the organization
Qualifications:
5+ years of professional software engineering experience using programming languages and frameworks (e.g., Ruby on Rails, PHP, Python, JavaScript)
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field, or equivalent work experience
Experience developing and maintaining large, complex production applications
Experience working with large monolithic applications and contributing to architectural transformations involving approaches such as service extraction, sharding, or pod- or cell-based architecture
Strong experience with Ruby or Ruby on Rails in complex production environments is highly preferred
Strong understanding of software architecture, system design, scalability, reliability, and performance principles
Strong understanding of designing, building, and consuming Representational State Transfer (REST) application programming interfaces (APIs)
Experience with performance tuning, memory optimization, caching mechanisms, and content delivery networks (CDNs)
Strong proficiency with version control and continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD) practices
Proven experience driving team efficiency or output quality through the strategic use of AI tools and automation
What will help you succeed in this role:
Ability to independently develop informed technical perspectives on complex and ambiguous systems
Ability to influence architectural decisions and technical direction across teams without relying on direct authority
Strong systems thinking and curiosity about how product domains, services, and platform components interact
Proactive approach to researching and evaluating current and emerging technologies
Comfort navigating ambiguity, changing priorities, and complex technical tradeoffs
A multi-dimensional background with a breadth of cross-functional interests or depth of specialized mastery
Personal resilience to learn from scratch, and successfully thrive in ambiguity
