Staff Network Engineer
About The Role
We are seeking a Staff Network Engineer to lead the design and evolution of our edge-to-cloud connectivity. In this role, you will help design highly available, low-latency communication systems that bridge on-premise robot deployments with our cloud-native control plane. You will serve as a technical authority for our network systems architecture, ensuring our scaling fleet is supported by robust, enterprise-grade networking foundations.
Key Responsibilities
5G wireless technology: Architect next-generation connectivity solutions utilizing 5G and private LTE networks, integrating containerized network functions to optimize edge performance.
Systems Architecture: Design and implement scalable, multi-tenant network architectures that support global robot deployments, focusing on security, performance, and fleet-wide observability.
Network Performance Engineering: Engineer solutions for high-throughput, low-latency telemetry and control traffic, utilizing kernel-level tuning and modern packet processing frameworks.
Hybrid Connectivity Design: Define standards for secure, high-performance tunneling between distributed edge devices and centralized cloud infrastructure.
Technical Leadership: Partner with cross-functional leadership to align network infrastructure with long-term business and product goals.
Required Qualifications
8+ years of experience in network architecture, systems engineering, or a staff-level networking role in a complex, distributed environment.
Expertise in Telco/5G wireless networking, including experience with containerized network functions and kernel-level performance optimization.
Mastery of the Linux network stack and core foundational networking protocols (BGP, OSPF, TCP/IP).
Demonstrated ability to design and implement complex SDN and virtualization solutions at scale.
Wired & Wireless Packet Analysis: Expert in conducting deep-dive PCAP and 802.11 Wi-Fi frame analysis using Wireshark and tcpdump to resolve complex wired/wireless network failures, roaming issues, and latency bottlenecks (RCA).
Wi-Fi Standards Knowledge: Working knowledge of IEEE 802.11 standards (802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax/be / Wi-Fi 5/6/6E/7) and standard-specific channel/band behaviors across 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz frequencies.
Travel required 25% to 50% US (primarily) and Canada
Preferred Experience
Deep proficiency with AWS cloud networking (VPC design, Transit Gateway, Direct Connect, and IoT Core).
Familiarity with Linux kernel eBPF/XDP for high-performance packet processing and observability.
RF Spectrum Analysis: Familiarity with spectrum analysis tools to identify RF interference, noise floor anomalies, and channel contention.
This is a fully remote role with the option to work hybrid if a commutable distance from our Salem, OR, Pittsburgh, PA, or Fremont, CA offices.
