Senior Legal Counsel, Commercial Legal (APAC)
What this job can offer you
This is an exciting time to join Remote and make a personal difference in the global HR-tech space as Senior Legal Counsel - Commercial Legal, APAC. We are looking for a seasoned and business-oriented commercial lawyer who is interested in helping with our team's mission, namely: to deliver pragmatic and innovative legal solutions for Remote's products and stakeholders while protecting Remote from unacceptable risk. This is an individual contributor role with no managerial responsibilities. It will be part of the Commercial Legal sub-team.
As a senior commercial lawyer, you will be the primary legal partner to our APAC sales teams — owning Terms of Service negotiation, contract redlining, and commercial agreement review across the region. APAC is a diverse and strategically important market for Remote, and this role sits directly on the path between a qualified opportunity and a signed contract. You will provide additional support to other regions as bandwidth permits, working alongside regional counsel to ensure seamless global coverage.
This is a role for someone who wants to be in the room. Our routine escalations and matter triage are increasingly automated; the work that reaches you is the work that requires judgment — live negotiation with opposing counsel, customer-paper deals, and novel risk allocation without a playbook to fall back on.
Remote's well-established Legal team is a group of friendly, talented and highly motivated lawyers from many different countries with a wide range of experience, and we are looking for a great match for them.
What you bring
Proven expertise supporting commercial transactions, particularly enterprise-level SaaS agreements, Terms of Service negotiations, and sales contract reviews. Experience supporting sales teams across APAC is highly valued.
Qualified to practise in an APAC jurisdiction. English is our working language for negotiations and internal collaboration; additional APAC languages are a strong advantage, but not a requirement.
Demonstrated comfort operating across multiple APAC jurisdictions and legal traditions, with the judgment to know when a local-law question genuinely needs local counsel and when it does not.
Strong commercial drafting skills, with the ability to craft clear, precise, and enforceable agreements that protect Remote's interests while facilitating business objectives.
Strong negotiation skills and the ability to develop creative, practical solutions for complex commercial and business challenges. You are comfortable leading live negotiations directly with counterparties and their counsel.
Experience with enterprise deals conducted on the customer's paper — customer MSAs, bespoke terms, and formal RFx processes — and the confidence to work from first principles when there is no template.
Sharp commercial instincts and strategic thinking, with a focus on driving business success while effectively navigating legal complexities. You are comfortable letting go of immaterial points to keep negotiations moving efficiently.
Prior HR-tech industry experience or familiarity with bespoke HR services agreements is beneficial, though not required.
Proven ability to excel in a fast-paced environment, maintaining responsiveness and adaptability under pressure.
Strong capacity to work independently while collaborating effectively with sales and cross-functional teams. You are confident in your expertise, open to learning, and prioritize team success over personal ego.
Outstanding ability to build trusted relationships with sales stakeholders while maintaining independent legal judgment. You know when to be flexible and when to push back firmly, acting as a strategic business partner rather than a bottleneck.
Comfort working alongside automated triage and legal tooling, and interest in helping improve it — you see automation as leverage rather than a threat.
A healthy dose of humor and humility that makes you a joy to work with.
Key Responsibilities
Act as the primary legal advisor to our APAC sales teams, providing timely and practical legal support on Terms of Service negotiation, contract redlining, and commercial agreement reviews — always prioritizing responsiveness, brevity, and clarity.
Lead live negotiations with customers and their counsel on strategic and enterprise deals, including escalated matters involving customer paper, high-value ARR thresholds, and enterprise customers.
Serve as the Legal Primary DRI for APAC under Remote's Legal Matter Framework, ensuring escalations are handled in-region and in-time-zone.
Provide additional legal support to other regions as bandwidth permits, collaborating with regional counsel to ensure consistent and high-quality legal guidance across regions.
Partner closely with Sales, Finance, and other cross-functional teams to structure and review commercial agreements that align with business objectives while mitigating legal and operational risks.
Develop and improve templates, playbooks, processes, and other knowledge resources around commercial transactions and sales support, including inputs that strengthen automated triage and self-service tooling.
Provide legal training and guidance to internal stakeholders, particularly APAC sales teams, to empower them with the tools and knowledge needed to navigate complex commercial issues effectively.
Partner with Remote's Data Protection and AI Governance team on privacy and AI terms arising in commercial deals, escalating substantive data protection questions to that team rather than owning them directly.
Coordinate with local counsel when jurisdiction-specific advice is required, translating that advice into practical and scalable guidance for Remote's teams.
Bring a solutions-focused mindset to every negotiation, minimizing roadblocks and resolving issues without unnecessary escalation.
