In 1968, the New York Stock Exchange began closing on Wednesdays so brokerage firms could catch up on paperwork. Every transaction depended on physical stock certificates being delivered, recorded, and reconciled. Trading had outgrown the infrastructure behind it. The expression “Paperwork crisis” had entered the nation's agenda resulting in other temporary measures like shortened trading days and extending settlement. The industry responded with electronic clearing systems and the establishment of the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC) laying the foundation for markets that could operate at an entirely different scale.

Every share needs an identity, every movement needs a record, and every balance needs to agree with the institutions holding the assets. The best financial infrastructure makes this complexity feel ordinary. Building it takes extraordinary care.

At Mercury, our Investments team helps founders put their capital to work through products like Treasury and Invest. Our Custody team builds the systems underneath that experience: the ledger, security master service, reconciliation, and operational tools that keep customer assets accurately accounted for and give our products a dependable foundation to grow.

We’re looking for a senior engineering manager to lead the Custody team through its next stages of growth and scale to better serve our small and large customers.

As part of this role, you will:

Lead, hire, and develop a team of senior engineers, providing thoughtful feedback and building a trusting and supportive environment.

Own the team’s technical strategy and roadmap, translating Mercury’s investment ambitions into focused priorities and predictable delivery.

Guide the design and evolution of core custody systems, including cash and securities ledgers, security master service, position tracking, and reconciliation.

Partner with product, investment operations, and compliance to turn business and regulatory requirements into well-designed systems, operational controls, and auditable workflows that balance correctness, scale, and maintainability.

Collaborate with Product and Partnerships to align integrations, responsibilities, and technical roadmaps.

Set a high bar for correctness, reliability, and incident response, balancing new capabilities with the maintenance and improvement of critical systems.

The ideal candidate for the role:

Has 3+ years of experience managing highly technical teams.

Has direct experience building or operating RIA and broker-dealer custody systems at scale, including ledgers, security master service, cash and securities reconciliation, and money movement.

Understands the broker-dealer operating model and how responsibilities and data flow across introducing brokers, clearing firms, and custodians.

Has worked closely with compliance and operations teams, translating requirements into practical engineering decisions and effective controls.

Understands the lifecycle of securities and the implications of settlement and corporate actions for customer cash and positions across equities, fixed income, ETFs, and mutual funds.
