Ruby Developer

Location: Remote (U.S.)

Salary: $140,000 - $150,000 annually

Clearance: Public Trust Eligible

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Ruby Developer to design, develop, and maintain APIs supporting mission-critical applications within the VA Lighthouse platform. The ideal candidate is a strong Ruby on Rails engineer with experience building scalable, secure, and high-performing APIs in a collaborative Agile environment.

Key Responsibilities

Design, develop, and maintain REST and GraphQL APIs.

Write production-grade Ruby code for core services and applications.

Collaborate with technical leadership to ensure code quality, security, and maintainability.

Develop integrations with internal, external, and third-party systems.

Create and maintain API documentation and development standards.

Implement authentication, authorization, encryption, and API security best practices.

Monitor and optimize API performance, reliability, and scalability.

Support API versioning and backward compatibility.

Troubleshoot production issues and participate in Tier 1/Tier 2 on-call rotations.

Promote the use of AI-enabled development tools to improve productivity and code quality.

Required Qualifications

6+ years of Ruby on Rails development experience.

Strong experience designing, building, and supporting APIs.

Experience with PostgreSQL, MySQL, or other relational databases.

Experience with RSpec testing framework.

Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.

Experience working in Agile software development environments.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and Helm.

Familiarity with OAuth and secure software development practices.

Experience with Git version control.

Experience with Sidekiq or similar asynchronous processing tools.

Exposure to Java, Spring Boot, and microservices architectures.

Federal government experience preferred.

Clearance & Eligibility Requirements

Must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Must be able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.

Candidates must have lived continuously within the United States for the previous three (3) consecutive years to meet federal background investigation requirements.

Must successfully pass a government suitability review and background investigation.
