About the Team

OpenAI’s Product & Research Communications team helps people understand our technology, what it makes possible, and how to use it. We work closely with teams across the company to bring new products and research to the world, tell stories grounded in real experiences, and build trusted relationships with journalists.

About the Role

We’re looking for a hands-on communications leader to own the launch strategy and storytelling for OpenAI’s frontier AI models across ChatGPT and the API. You’ll turn advances in model capabilities into clear, compelling stories for research, developer, customer, and consumer audiences.

You’ll get into the details with researchers, engineers, and product teams to understand what has changed, what the evidence shows, and what people can do with it. That means working through evaluations, exploring model behavior, and finding concrete examples that make an advance clear without losing its limitations.

This role calls for technical curiosity and strong editorial judgment. You should be as comfortable working through an evaluation with a researcher as writing a launch blog, shaping a media strategy, or preparing a leader for an interview.

This role is based in San Francisco, CA. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees.

In this role, you will:

- Lead model launches end to end across ChatGPT and the API, owning positioning, messaging, media strategy, spokesperson preparation, rollout, and follow-through.

- Work with researchers, engineers, and product teams from the earliest stages of a release. Dig into capability changes, evaluations, model behavior, and limitations to identify what is new and why it matters.

- Develop distinct stories for research, developer, customer, and consumer audiences, explaining the technical advance, what developers can build, how customers can apply it, and what it makes possible in everyday life.

- Partner closely with the head of B2B communications to translate frontier AI advances, including changes in model cost and efficiency, into clear, evidence-backed stories about customer use cases and business value.

- Find and develop compelling demonstrations, use cases, and proof points with research and product teams. Test claims against the evidence and make clear where a result does and does not generalize.

- Write and edit launch blogs, messaging, FAQs, pitches, and briefings, staying close to the work from the first technical discussion through final materials.

- Build trusted relationships with journalists across technology, science, business, and consumer media. Prepare researchers and leaders for substantive briefings, interviews, and public engagements.

- Lead communications and editorial work on model system cards with safety researchers and safety communications colleagues, keeping evaluations, safeguards, and limitations clear and consistent with the launch.

- Bring together consumer, developer, B2B, safety, and regional communications partners, alongside Marketing and Legal, to align stories, reviews, timing, and responsibilities.

- Build a sustained story about model progress between launches. Use audience questions, media coverage, and real-world feedback to identify follow-up stories and sharpen future communications.

You might thrive in this role if you:

- Have a strong track record leading major launches for technically complex products or research, with clear ownership of both strategy and execution.

- Enjoy getting into the details with researchers and engineers. You can work through evaluations, ask precise questions, and identify the story in a capability change.

- Are an excellent writer and editor who can make the same technical advance meaningful to researchers, developers, business customers, and everyday users.

- Know how to build a story from evidence, demonstrations, and real use cases, and can distinguish a meaningful advance from a result that needs more context.

- Bring strong media judgment and trusted relationships with journalists, and can prepare technical and executive spokespeople for demanding questions.

- Can lead a complex launch across teams, make sound calls as plans change, and take responsibility for the details as well as the big picture.

- Have sound judgment about public claims, sensitive information, and timing. You know when to challenge an assumption, seek expert review, or explain uncertainty.

- Build strong partnerships across functions, give clear editorial feedback, and bring genuine curiosity about AI and how people use it.
