Principal Designer, Banking
It all started with an idea at Block in 2013. Initially built to take the pain out of peer-to-peer payments, Cash App has gone from a simple product with a single purpose to a dynamic ecosystem, developing unique financial products, including Afterpay/Clearpay, to provide a better way to send, spend, invest, borrow and save to our 50+ million monthly active customers. We want to redefine the world’s relationship with money to make it more relatable, instantly available, and universally accessible.
Today, Cash App has thousands of employees working globally across office and remote locations, with a culture geared toward innovation, collaboration and impact. We’ve been a distributed team since day one, and many of our roles can be done remotely from the countries where Cash App operates. No matter the location, we tailor our experience to ensure our employees are creative, productive, and happy.
The role
We are looking for a Principal Designer to join the Cash App Banking team.
Banking is where Cash App becomes the place people actually keep their money. We design the core of that relationship: the Cash App Card, direct deposit, savings, Borrow, Cash App Green, Teens and Family accounts, physical Cash Tags, and bitcoin. These are the products customers touch every day and trust with the most consequential parts of their financial lives.
This is a hands-on principal role for a designer who sets the bar rather than describes it. You will own ambiguous, highest-stakes work: taking zero-to-one product ideas from a rough thesis to a shipped experience, and raising the craft standard on everything already in market. You will work across the whole surface, from the systems logic underneath a product to the last five percent of polish that makes it feel inevitable.
Banking design work is unusually constrained. Real money moves, regulation is real, and trust is the product. We are looking for someone who treats those constraints as the interesting part, and who can make something clear, warm, and distinctive inside them.
We are someone who is fluent with AI and prototyping tools and uses them to explore more, decide faster, and put working software in front of people early, without ever trading away craft.
You Will
Own complex, ambiguous Banking initiatives end to end, from early exploration through shipped product
Drive zero-to-one product experiences that are both strategically sharp and visually distinctive
Set and hold the quality bar for Banking design, defining what excellent looks like and demonstrating it in your own work
Partner with Product, Engineering, Risk, Compliance, and Research as a trusted peer, translating complex financial and regulatory logic into experiences people immediately understand
Prototype early and often, using AI and emerging tools to compress the distance between an idea and something people can actually use
Shape long-term product vision and design strategy across Banking surfaces, and influence what makes the roadmap
Contribute to and extend the systems and patterns Cash App is built on, strengthening cohesion across products
Elevate the designers around you through critique, feedback, and modeling high craft
You Have
10+ years of product design experience, with a portfolio showing exceptional craft and systems thinking
A track record of shipping zero-to-one products, not only iterating on existing ones
Mastery of interaction, visual, and systems design, and the judgment to know which one a problem actually needs
Experience designing in complex, high-stakes domains where clarity and trust are non-negotiable. Fintech, banking, health, or another regulated space
Proven ability to operate autonomously through ambiguity, setting your own direction and bringing partners with you
Fluency with AI and prototyping tools, and a real point of view on how they change design practice
Strong influence and communication skills as a peer to cross-functional leadership
A hands-on posture. You still design, and your own work sets the standard
