IT Business Systems Engineer
About the Company
We are a renewable energy and ocean technology company committed to rapidly developing and deploying technologies that will ensure a sustainable future for Earth by unlocking the vast energy potential of its oceans. Our focus is on capturing civilizational levels of ultra-low-cost renewable energy for applications including computing and affordable renewable fuels delivered to shore.
The company is a public benefit corporation headquartered in Portland, Oregon, and backed by leading venture capitalists, philanthropic investors, university endowments, and private investment offices. We operate as an idea meritocracy in which the best ideas change the company’s direction on a regular basis.
Our staff have worked at organizations such as SpaceX, Blue Origin, Boeing, Tesla, Apple, Virgin Orbit, Astra, Google, Amazon, Microsoft, New Relic, Bridgewater, Raytheon, Disney Imagineering, and the US Army and Air Force, as well as research universities, startups, and small companies across a range of industries.
About the Job
Our core technology is the node, a device that produces energy in the ocean’s harshest conditions for years at a time without human maintenance or intervention.
We're looking for a Business Systems Engineer to own the platforms our company runs on day to day and the connective tissue between them. Google Workspace, Jira, Confluence, Jira Service Management, and Slack are where work actually happens here. You'll own how they're configured, and how they talk to each other.
This role is for someone who reaches for an API when the admin console runs out of road. A lot of the work is eliminating the manual handoffs between systems: the spreadsheet someone maintains by hand, the ticket someone copies into a second tool, the approval that lives in a DM. You'll find those and replace them with something that runs itself. You'll partner across Finance, People Ops, and Engineering to understand what they need, then build it. Our IAM Engineer owns the identity plane, so you'll work together on SSO and provisioning for the applications you administer.
Candidates should have strong interpersonal skills and be able to thrive in a creative, scrappy, and collaborative environment in which the best ideas change the company’s direction on a regular basis.
Responsibilities
Business Platform Administration
Own Google Workspace administration: tenant configuration, organizational units, Drive and sharing governance, email routing and security, and rollout of new capabilities
Administer Jira, Jira Service Management, and Confluence, including projects, workflows, custom fields, forms, permission schemes, automation rules, and reporting
Own Slack workspace configuration: channel standards, app and integration approvals, retention, and Slack Connect governance
Maintain a clear administration model for each platform, including who can change what and how changes are reviewed
Integrations and Automation
Design and build integrations between business systems using APIs, webhooks, and automation platforms
Write and maintain code that automates recurring work across SaaS tools, with version control, monitoring, and error handling
Replace manual processes and shadow spreadsheets with reliable, observable workflows
Own the reliability of the integrations you build, including alerting when they fail and runbooks for when they need help
Business Partnership
Work with Finance, People Ops, Legal, and Engineering to translate process problems into system designs
Drive intake, requirements, and rollout for new business applications, including evaluation, pilot, and adoption
Build reporting and dashboards that give teams visibility into their own work
Document configurations and workflows so the next person can pick them up
SaaS Stack Health
Maintain our SaaS application inventory, including ownership, license counts, and renewal dates
Right-size licensing and surface underused spend
Partner with our IAM Engineer to bring applications under SSO and automated provisioning
Own the application layer of our compliance framework (NIST or equivalent), including access control, audit logging, and data retention
Required Qualifications
Experience administering business platforms such as Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Atlassian products, or Slack at an organization of meaningful size
Experience writing code against SaaS APIs to automate work the admin console couldn't do
Experience designing and maintaining integrations between business systems using REST APIs, webhooks, or an integration platform
Ability to work directly with non-technical stakeholders, understand the underlying process problem, and propose a system that solves it
Ability to write clear documentation for both administrators and end users
Desired Qualifications
Atlassian experience: Jira workflow and permission scheme design, JSM request types and queues, and Confluence space administration
Google Workspace administration experience, including Drive governance, Vault, and security settings
Scripting and development skills (Python, JavaScript, or Google Apps Script) with source control and testing practices
Experience with SaaS lifecycle management: evaluation, implementation, renewal, and license optimization
Familiarity with SSO and SCIM from the application administrator's side
Experience supporting a security or compliance framework (NIST, ISO 27001, SOC 2, or equivalent)
The above qualifications are desired, not required. We encourage you to apply if you are a strong candidate with only some of the desired skills and experience listed.
Additional Requirements
Available for occasional off-hours work to support platform migrations and integration cutovers that have to land outside business hours
Travel to the Portland office quarterly if working remotely
Intermittently able to work longer hours to support critical needs. While we expect a lot of each other, we also offer a high degree of autonomy and work-life balance, including flexible PTO and flexible working hours.
