Engineering Manager, Data Platform
The Data Platform team builds the foundational data infrastructure and tooling that empowers data engineers, analysts, and data scientists across MNTN. The team owns the internal data platform as a product: enabling high-quality, self-serve, and scalable data workflows through well-designed systems and strong engineering practices, covering everything from ingestion and transformation to orchestration, observability, and governance.
We're looking for an Engineering Manager to lead the Data Platform team, working closely with a Staff Engineer to define the roadmap, coordinate execution, and ensure the team delivers high-leverage tools and systems for its internal customers. This is a hands-on engineering leadership role. The ideal candidate stays close to the code, contributes to key projects, and sets a strong technical bar while supporting and growing a team of engineers.
What you'll do
Lead the Data Platform team in designing, building, and maintaining core infrastructure and tooling to support analytics, data science, and data engineering workloads.
Partner with the Principal Engineer to define the team’s technical roadmap and architecture.
Collaborate cross-functionally with data science, analytics, product, and engineering teams to understand use cases and shape platform features accordingly.
Ensure high reliability, scalability, and usability of the data platform—covering areas like data ingestion, transformation, orchestration, observability, and governance.
Establish and enforce best practices for data engineering and platform development.
Provide hands-on technical leadership: participate in design discussions, conduct code reviews, and contribute code as needed.
Hire, coach, and develop engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence, ownership, and continuous improvement.
Manage communication around the platform roadmap, priorities, and ongoing work to stakeholders across the business.
What success looks like
A self-serve data platform that internal teams trust and adopt without heavy hand-holding
Reliable, well-governed data infrastructure with strong observability and low incident rates
Clear technical roadmap, delivered predictably in partnership with the Staff Engineer
A growing, high-performing team with strong engineering practices and technical ownership
Strong stakeholder confidence in the platform’s direction and reliability
What you'll bring
7+ years of software engineering experience, including 2+ years leading teams or projects.
Demonstrated experience building internal platforms or developer tools, ideally in a data-intensive environment.
Strong understanding of modern data infrastructure: orchestration (e.g. Airflow, Dagster), warehousing (e.g. BigQuery, Snowflake), streaming (e.g. Kafka), and transformation tools (e.g. SQLMesh).
Proficiency with cloud infrastructure (AWS or GCP), containers, and infrastructure-as-code.
Ability to lead cross-functional workstreams and translate user needs into robust platform capabilities.
A product mindset, focus on solving real user problems, not just building technology.
Willingness to be hands-on and contribute technically while building a high-performing team.
