Database Platform Engineer
About the Role
TechGrove by Banyan Software is a portfolio of vertical SaaS businesses. We are looking for a Database Platform Engineer to own the full database layer across one of our cloud-native product companies. This is not a traditional DBA role. You will be the engineering owner of everything database: schema design, performance, stored procedures, views, migrations, on-call, and all database-related decisions across Dev, QA, and Production environments built on Azure SQL Managed Instance.
This role is being built in-house to establish long-term ownership and institutional knowledge inside the engineering team.
What You Will Own
Azure SQL Managed Instance across all environments: Dev, QA, and Production
Schema design, evolution, and all migration scripts
All stored procedures, views, functions, and complex queries
Query performance tuning including execution plans, index strategy, statistics, and blocking analysis
On-call database support and incident response
Database CI/CD pipeline using DACPAC or migration-based deployments integrated with Azure DevOps
Database security covering TDE, RBAC, row-level security, auditing, and access control
Backup, restore, and disaster recovery validation
Monitoring and alerting via Azure Monitor and SQL Insights
Capacity planning and database health across all environments
Partnering with application developers to review data access patterns, flag inefficient queries, and guide ORM usage
What You Will Not Do
This is not a ticket-taking support role. You will not manage on-premise servers, run manual backups, or handle routine admin tasks that can be automated. You are expected to engineer solutions, not administer systems.
Required Skills
8 to 12 years of hands-on SQL Server experience
Deep expertise in Azure SQL Managed Instance or Azure SQL Database
Advanced T-SQL covering complex queries, stored procedures, views, triggers, and dynamic SQL
Query tuning using execution plans, index design, statistics, and wait stats analysis
Database DevOps using DACPAC, Flyway, or equivalent migration tooling integrated with CI/CD pipelines
Schema design for high-traffic transactional systems
Azure Monitor, SQL Insights, or equivalent observability tooling
Strong understanding of high availability including Always On, failover groups, and geo-replication
Experience working alongside .NET development teams using ADO.NET or Entity Framework
Good to Have
Azure Database Administrator Associate certification
Experience with Azure SQL pricing tiers and cost optimization
Familiarity with Microsoft Fabric or Azure Synapse for analytical workloads
Experience with row-level security for multi-tenant SaaS products
What Good Looks Like in This Role
No production query runs without an index review
Every schema change ships with a tested migration script
Database incidents are resolved with a root cause document and a prevention plan
Developers get a response within the same sprint when they raise a data access concern
On-call is structured, documented, and not reactive
Work Model
Hybrid. Minimum 3 days per week from our Chennai office. Remaining days flexible based on team and sprint cycle needs.
