Data Engineering Manager (Billing Development)
About the Role: You will own the design and architecture of aCommerce's billing platform. Your main goal is to turn billable business events into accurate, auditable charges, invoices, and financial records. This is a highly hands-on leadership role where you will lead a team of data engineers while continuing to write code, build prototypes, and set engineering standards.
Responsibilities:
Specifically, this role will be doing:
Design and own the end-to-end architecture of a scalable, multi-country, multi-currency billing platform, from capturing billable business events through rating, invoicing and posting to the accounting system
Define the billing data model – clients, contracts, rate cards, billable events, charges, invoices, credit notes and adjustments – with full traceability from every invoice line back to its source events
Architect the pipelines that extract billable business events from our supply chain, fulfillment, delivery and SaaS applications into the data platform, guaranteeing completeness and integrity
Build a flexible rating and pricing engine that supports our commercial models: per-order and per-unit fees, storage, tiered and volume pricing, minimum commitments, subscriptions and pass-through costs
Ensure the billing platform meets accounting requirements in terms of completeness and timeliness, including revenue recognition, accruals, month-end close, tax across Southeast Asian markets and integration with our ERP
Design reconciliation and controls: automated checks between operational events, billed charges and financial records, complete audit trails, and processes for disputes, adjustments and re-billing
This is a MUST: Stay hands-on, write production code for the most critical and complex components, build prototypes and proofs of conceptOwn the quality of the code your team delivers – lead design and code reviews, and quality-check the pipelines, SQL, Python and data models built by the data engineers
Establish and enforce engineering practices: version control and branching strategy, CI/CD, automated testing (unit, integration and data-quality tests), infrastructure-as-code, documentation and observability
Define data-quality standards and monitoring for billing data, and lead incident response and root-cause analysis when billing issues occur
Make and document architecture decisions that balance scalability, performance, cost and maintainability on our AWS-based data platform (Amazon Redshift, PostgreSQL)
Work with revenue operation team to define event contracts and schemas, so that upstream changes do not break billing
Ensure that settlements from all sources are ingested, monitored, and maintained for maximum reliability
Translate client contracts and commercial requirements from Finance and the commercial teams into technical specifications, and advise them on the feasibility and billing impact of new pricing models
Plan and prioritize the billing roadmap with Billing Product Manager; do work break down, effort estimation, and deliver predictably
Lead, coach and develop the billing engineering team – hiring, setting goals and giving regular feedback – to build a high-performing team
Protect financial and client data through appropriate access controls, and support internal and external audits
Identify possible risks and take measures to prevent these and escalate if needed
