BIM Modeler - Instrumentation & Controls
What you'll do
As BIM Modeler for Instrumentation & Controls, you'll own the controls and instrumentation systems model on Giga Energy's AI data center projects — sensor networks, control systems architecture, cable and conduit routing, control panels, I/O locations, and all the hardware that monitors and manages facility operations. You'll model in Revit and work in AutoCAD, because both matter here: our federated model lives in Revit, but controls documentation and partner deliverables often come as CAD, and someone has to make those two worlds agree. That translation is a core part of the job, not an afterthought.
You'll also be building the controls side of our BIM capability rather than maintaining someone else's — the families, templates, and standards you create are the ones Giga will use on the next campus. Expect to coordinate directly with our Controls Engineers, electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, IT/commissioning teams, and the crews on site, resolving cable routing conflicts before they hit the field and verifying sensor locations against equipment general arrangements before installation. It's a hands-on, high-volume role for someone who wants real ownership and is energized by a fast pace rather than worn down by it.
Where you'll work
We are an in-office culture — velocity matters when you're building physical infrastructure, and the best decisions happen in the room. This role is ideally based in our Houston, Long Beach, or San Francisco offices, with full-time onsite expectations outside of bi-weekly WFH Fridays. Some travel to active project sites should be expected.
That said, we will make exceptions for truly exceptional talent if you live outside one of our hubs. If you're the right person for this role, we'll have a conversation about what works.
Responsibilities
Create Models for instrumentation and controls systems in Revit and AutoCAD Plant 3D across active projects: sensor layouts, I/O cabinets, control panels, networking equipment, cable tray and conduit routing, and all field device locations
Model cable tray, conduit runs, and cable routing for controls systems; coordinate conduit sizing and routing against electrical, mechanical, and structural scopes to avoid conflicts before the build
Model control panels, junction boxes, disconnect switches, and cabinet locations to ensure accessibility and proper integration with adjacent systems
Convert incoming AutoCAD controls drawings, P&IDs, electrical schematics, and partner controls documentation into native Revit geometry; produce CAD deliverables back out where partners or AHJs require them.
Maintain the controls model within the federated model set per the Giga BIM Execution Plan, including worksets, links, shared coordinates, and model discipline
Participate in and run clash detection cycles in Navisworks, resolving controls-side conflicts (conduit vs. structural, sensors vs. mechanical equipment, etc.) rather than only reporting them
Raise and track model change requests so revisions are controlled and stale geometry never reaches a bidder, controls contractor, or site crew
Produce controls drawings, system layout plans, instrumentation and I/O location plans, cable routing schedules, conduit and tray schedules, control panel layouts, and sensor/device schedules.
Generate model-based quantity takeoffs for cable, conduit, sensors, panels, and controls hardware to support procurement and estimating
Build and maintain the parametric Revit family library for repeatable controls content sensor types, control panels, cable tray sections, conduit supports, I/O cabinet types so the next project starts from validated content
Familiarity with Template and Modular designs strategies and Processes
Contribute to controls model templates, view standards, shared parameters, and naming conventions under the BIM Lead
Support commissioning and startup teams with as-built documentation, final layouts, and system verification against the model
Maintain as-built model updates from field markups, installation photos, and site feedback
Mentor junior drafters and review their controls output before it is released
Requirements
5+ years modeling building systems and MEP scope in Revit for industrial, energy, data center, or mission-critical projects.
Expert-level Autodesk Revit, including MEP family creation, parametric content, worksharing, and shared coordinates. Family creation is a hard requirement, not a nice-to-have
Strong AutoCAD Plant 3D. A large share of what we receive and issue is still CAD, and you must be genuinely fluent moving work in both directions between AutoCAD and Revit without losing accuracy.
Demonstrated experience with controls system layout, instrumentation, cable tray and conduit routing, and sensor/device placement
Able to read and work from P&IDs, electrical schematics, controls system documentation, equipment general arrangements, and sequence of operations
Navisworks proficiency, including running clash tests and resolving interference in your own models
Working knowledge of, or ability to quickly learn, Autodesk Construction Cloud (Forma) and Bluebeam Revu
Working knowledge of building codes and standards relevant to electrical distribution and controls (NEC, IEC, NFPA)
High school diploma required; degree or diploma in electrical engineering, controls engineering, or related technical field preferred, or equivalent years of experience
Strong written and verbal communication, and the ability to work cross-functionally with controls engineers, electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, IT teams, and site crews
Able to work under the direction of the BIM Lead and Design TPMs with minimal oversight
Authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship
Bonus points
Data center or mission-critical facilities experience — building management systems, HVAC controls, power monitoring and controls
Background in controls engineering, electrical controls, or instrumentation design
Steel detailing or conduit/cable tray detailing exposure — familiarity with fabrication-level documentation
Dynamo or Revit API scripting to automate repetitive modeling and QA
ReCap or point cloud workflows for as-built reconciliation and verification against physical installation
Commissioning experience understanding of FAT, SAT, and system performance verification
Familiarity with local AHJ processes
