Responsibilities

Engine team owns three components used company-wide: Workato Expression Language (our original mini-language for data transformation in recipes), Data Mapper (a new, UI-oriented mapping and format-transformation component), and Decision Engine (a rules component, currently static-only, being expanded to support formulas). The stack is a Rust core with WASM sandboxing per component, with bindings into Ruby and GO.

In this role, you will also be responsible to:

Design and build core language and runtime features across the Expression Language, Data Mapper, and Decision Engine.

Own and extend the Rust core, embedding it as a native component inside Ruby and Go services via FFI bindings.

Help expand Decision Engine from static rules to support formulas.

Contribute to WASM sandboxing so each component runs safely isolated from the others.

Partner closely with Product and with the AI team on what these components need to expose.

Requirements

Qualifications / Experience / Technical Skills

Deep, hands-on Rust experience at a systems/backend level.

Working competence in Go - real production ability, though not necessarily your primary language.

Proven experience embedding Rust as a library or native extension inside another language's runtime (e.g. Rust-in-Ruby, Rust-in-Go).

Strong algorithms and data-structures fundamentals (sorting, trees, data processing).

Comfort operating without a fixed process methodology, in a deadline-driven, cross-team environment.

Experience with AI-assisted workflows, particularly in system analysis and hunting for inconsistencies and corner cases.

Scale: Experience with systems handling millions of requests/events per day.

Exceptional technical writing and communication abilities for diverse audiences.

Experience planning phased implementations and leading complex cross-team projects.

Proven track record with feature flags, gradual rollouts, and zero-downtime deployments.

Ability to facilitate architectural decision-making and create technical roadmaps.

Mentorship mindset and cost analysis capabilities.

Nice to Have

Compiler engineering experience - a strong plus.

WASM/sandboxing experience (Wasmtime, Wasmer, WASI, or similar).

Familiarity with data-format standards/RFCs (JSON, Unicode).

Awareness of project-cycle practices (Scrum/waterfall) and testing discipline.

Community: open source contributions, conference speaking, technical writing.
