Staff Technical Writer
Okta is seeking a Staff Technical Writer to lead documentation for major product launches, spanning both developer.okta.com (APIs, SDKs, integration guides) and the help.okta.com (admin/product guides).
Reporting to the Manager of Technical Documentation, you'll quickly ramp up on the team’s guidelines and processes and set expectations with cross-functional partners on documentation deliverables.
Location: Bengaluru, Karnataka, India
Work Mode: Hybrid (minimum of 2 days onsite/week)
Note: Requires an in-person meeting with the Hiring Manager at our Bengaluru office following the final rounds.
Onboarding requires in-person travelling to our Bengaluru office.
What you'll be doing
Work closely with Engineering, Product Management, QA, Support, and members of the Information Development team.
Prioritize documentation work across concurrent initiatives to meet release dates.
Create end-to-end feature documentation for multiple engineering teams. These include developer content (API references and SDK/CLI/Terraform guides) and admin/product content (feature and configuration guides).
Develop comprehensive product expertise through hands-on engagement to ensure documentation accuracy and alignment with customer workflows.
Become an expert in the Information Development team’s guidelines, processes, and tools.
Identify scope for improvement and suggest enhancements, including the use of Generative AI tools to increase productivity.
Analyze customer feedback before and after delivering documentation to enhance content depth, quality, and relevance.
Minimum knowledge, skills, and abilities
7+ years writing documentation for Cloud or Enterprise products.
Tools/Technologies: Oxygen XML Author, VS Code, Acrolinx, Git/GitHub, Jira, and Confluence.
Framework: DITA, Markdown, OpenAPI, and API publishing platforms.
AI Tools: Hands-on experience with Generative AI tools to enhance documentation quality and workflow productivity.
Security/IAM domain knowledge (Okta or similar IDaaS).
Track record of leading the documentation efforts independently for a launch.
Strong technical fluency to read code and API specs and validate content firsthand.
Experience writing for Developers, such as SDK, CLI, or API reference guides.
Comfortable prioritizing and negotiating scope or timelines with stakeholders.
Self-starter and a strong communicator (both verbal and written).
Experience working with team members across different timezones.
A team player who enjoys collaborating with different stakeholders.
Experience working in a fast-paced, agile environment.
Desired knowledge
Familiarity with localization and translation best practices.
Working knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
Education
Bachelor, Diploma or Masters degree in Technical Communications, Information Systems, or a related technical field, and equivalent work experience, is required for this role.
