Role Overview
As a Software Engineer II on the DevEx / Platform team, your customers are the engineers at Housecall Pro. Your job is to make them faster, more confident, and happier — by improving the tools, workflows, and infrastructure they rely on every day. The better our engineers ship, the better our Pros' experience gets.
You design and build internal tooling, CI/CD pipelines, developer environments, and the paved roads that other teams build on top of. You thrive in a fast-paced environment, shipping small, incremental improvements while holding a high bar for reliability, performance, and developer experience. You work across our stack as a polyglot engineer, comfortably diving into backend, frontend, or mobile codebases to unblock teams or improve shared infrastructure.
Our team is passionate, empathetic, hard working, and above all else focused on multiplying the impact of every engineer at Housecall Pro. When they win, our Pros win.
What you do each day
Build and improve the internal tools, libraries, and templates that other engineering teams depend on
Own and evolve CI/CD pipelines — reducing build times, improving reliability, and making deployments boring
Investigate and resolve flaky tests, slow jobs, and other sources of friction in the engineering workflow
Improve local development environments so engineers can get productive in minutes, not hours
Partner with engineering teams to understand their pain points and translate them into platform improvements
Write clean, maintainable, well-tested code in the languages our teams use day-to-day
Participate in code reviews to uphold engineering quality and share knowledge across the org
Use metrics (build times, deployment frequency, MTTR, test reliability, developer satisfaction) to prioritize work and measure impact
Contribute to documentation, golden paths, and scaffolding that make the right thing the easy thing
Rotate through unfamiliar stacks confidently — backend, frontend, or mobile — to support the teams using them
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent work experience
2–4 years of professional software engineering experience
Strong proficiency in at least one modern programming language (i.e. Go, Python, Java, TypeScript, Ruby) with a track record of high-performance delivery
Comfortable becoming productive in unfamiliar stacks and working as a polyglot engineer
Hands-on experience reading and debugging CI/CD pipelines (i.e. GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, Jenkins)
Experience with at least one test framework, including investigating and fixing flaky tests
Familiarity with version control systems (i.e. Git) and cloud environments (i.e. AWS)
Demonstrated ability to leverage AI tools to improve workflows, streamline execution, or enhance outputs
What will help you succeed
A service mindset — you treat other engineers as customers and measure your work by their outcomes
Ability to estimate, design, and deliver a small epic end-to-end
Strong collaboration skills in a distributed team environment
Curiosity and ownership mindset when solving technical problems
Interest in improving engineering workflows and developer productivity
Clear written and verbal communication in English
