Intro to Position

The Senior Insights Analyst, Mobile Analytics will be critical to building a new, leaner, audience-centric, data-driven app that could serve NPR and partnering stations in multi-modal formats. We will drive a significant increase in weekly audience and known users, and build engaging experiences that deepen daily habits, increase listening hours, and maximize revenue yield.

As the Senior Insights Analyst, Mobile Analytics for the NPR App,  you will drive data-informed decisions for NPR’s new audience-centric app.You will be the main point of contact to formulate, help run, and analyze experimentation done on NPR’s owned and operated platforms.  Your responsibilities also include extracting insights from complex datasets, creating visualizations, and managing cross-functional relationships. As a key member of the Audience Insights team, you’ll work closely with digital product teams, the newsroom, and leaders at NPR and our member stations nationwide. You have a unique blend of thoughtful, data-driven curiosity and pragmatism. You know how to make data come to life and be actionable. And you love the idea of using data to make NPR (and the world) a better place.

Reports to the Audience Insights Senior Manager, Product.

This is a union-represented role covered under the terms of a collective bargaining agreement with NABET-CWA DMU.

Responsibilities

Driving critical insights based on analyses for the app product team, including assessing audience behavior, advocating for audience needs on the NPR App, running experiments, and leading relationships with relevant stakeholders

Create and own the experimentation process on our owned and operated platforms, partnering closely with teams across the organization to understand and implement results

Provide actionable insights and recommendations for a variety of groups across the organization as needed, including foundational trend reporting and presenting insights from deep analyses

Independently write, implement quality controls, and train others to write complex SQL queries to provide performance analytics across app, video, and website datasets

Share technical expertise with co-workers and teammates to improve work product

Work with internal teams on how they can best use data for decision-making and train them to use insights, tools and resources.

Prioritize incoming work based on knowledge of departmental and organizational strategy

Through deep stakeholder cultivation and understanding of the media environment, anticipate needs and develop research tools and reporting to address current and future business needs

Deliver recommendations with a clear connection to business decisions

Proactively communicate relevant insights to cultivate a learning culture across the organization.

Required Skill and Qualifications

5+ years demonstrated expertise in SQL and databases. BigQuery/Dataform experience is a plus. Proven expertise fetching and transforming data using SQL and analytics APIs, with proven advanced SQL knowledge, taking raw data and manipulating it for complex cohort, behavioral, and pattern analysis.

5+ years demonstrated expertise in Google Firebase data and app analytics

5+ years demonstrated expertise with GA4 or similar large, raw datasets of digital behavior

5+ years demonstrated experience in Optimizely or comparable tool

Ability to independently learn and understand new and complex data sources and integrate them with other data sets to create a complete analysis.

Expert proficiency in Excel or Google Sheets, including writing complex formulas, validating data, and automated reporting.

Skills in visualizing data, drawing conclusions, and explaining to a business audience, with the ability to flex style, depth, and complexity based on the audience.

Excellent analysis and experimental design skills with a keen sense for data gaps and inconsistencies, and experience owning data-driven research from project inception to completion.

Ability to assess organizational needs and prioritize requests based on the largest impact on the business.

Proactive client and stakeholder communication, building trust and nurturing relationships to grow the culture of using audience insights.

Deep domain knowledge, researching and following experts in the field to sustain and grow expertise.

Excellent oral, written and visual communication skills, particularly at explaining complex quantitative information to non-technical audiences.

Self-starter with the ability to work independently in a constantly changing environment with little supervision, as well as in a collaborative team environment..

Eagerness to train other team members on technical skills and collaborate with them on creating a data-driven strategy, and to contribute to team culture, providing input on standards, stakeholder management, team resources, etc.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in news media

Proven experience in analyzing data and building statistical models using R or Python.

Proven experience in identifying complex analytical issues problems that require cross-functional collaboration and building partnerships to solve them

Proven experience bringing teams together to solve complex problems

Work Location & Requirements

NPR Remote-Permitted: This is a remote-permitted role. This role is based out of our Washington, D.C. office, but the employee may choose to work on a remote basis from a location that NPR approves. You will have the option of working (a) remotely from a location of your choosing within the United States that is supported by NPR; (b) on-site at an NPR facility, based on the availability of desks and approval from NPR; or (c) a combination of both. Regardless of where you choose to work from, you may be expected to travel to other locations from time to time to perform the duties of your position.

This is a full-time, exempt position.

Compensation

Salary Range: The U.S.-based anticipated salary range for this opportunity is $105,435.13 to $116,380.66 plus benefits. The range displayed reflects the minimum and maximum salaries NPR expects to provide for new hires for the position across all US locations.
