We are looking for an experienced Engineering Manager with a passion for technology, people, projects, data, and processes, a leader with depth and breadth of technical experience who can inspire teams and guide them toward success. About the team

The APM product organization drives New Relic's customer-facing Application Performance Monitoring (APM) experiences, agents, and next-generation application platform capabilities, including AI Monitoring, Digital Experience Monitoring, and Synthetic testing.

This full-stack team owns our Distributed Tracing product, which gives customers visibility into their application workloads including AI agents and is mission-critical to the next generation of APM tools. You will lead a team of engineers, drive thought leadership, ship enterprise-ready products, improve operational excellence, grow engineering talent, and support the exponential data growth of our customers.

What you'll do

Lead and grow a team responsible for the design, development, and maintenance of New Relic's Distributed Tracing platform

Coach and mentor a dedicated group of engineers, helping them develop their personal and professional skills while staying engaged and motivated

Drive technology decision-making, process efficiency, and engineering excellence

Ensure the success of software projects through planning and execution, both within and across teams

Collaborate with cross-functional partners to align product and business goals

Implement processes and methodologies that foster operational excellence

Drive the recruitment, training, and development of strong engineering talent

This role requires

Proven experience in software engineering, with 10+ years overall and 3+ years leading engineering teams

Track record of leading and scaling strong technical teams

Experience handling customer incidents, including the ability to dive deep and understand the technical implications and risks of engineering decisions

Hands-on experience with Java or other backend programming languages

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

Experience delivering products or solutions in cloud environments

Bonus points if you have

Experience with observability tooling, distributed tracing, OpenTelemetry, or APM

Experience with high-scale distributed systems, Kafka, or Kubernetes

Experience shipping developer-facing products
