BESS Performance Engineer
Welcome to 10Pearls!
We believe in harnessing the power of technology for social good through our core values: Innovate, modernize and accelerate.
About the role
This position will work within the Asset Management team, which is responsible for the management of a growing portfolio of distributed generation projects located across the United States. This position reports to the VP, Engineering. As a BESS Performance Engineer, you will be responsible for leading the performance analysis, monitoring, and reporting for our standalone Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and our transition into AC and DC-coupled BESS + PV assets. You will partner closely with our Data Scientist and Asset Management teams to build BESS-specific KPIs, ensure our energy storage assets are operating at peak technical and commercial efficiency, and collaborate closely with engineers, O&M teams, project managers, and business stakeholders to identify opportunities for data-driven insights and solutions.
Core Responsibilities
Lead the monitoring, performance analysis, and operational reporting for a portfolio of DG standalone BESS and paired PV + BESS assets.
Develop, calculate, and track critical BESS KPIs including Round-Trip Efficiency (RTE), State of Health (SOH), auxiliary power consumption, availability, and State of Charge (SOC) management.
Conduct complex degradation modeling and build predictive analytics to forecast battery life, track SOH trajectories against capacity guarantees, and optimize charging/discharging cycles.
Extract, clean, and analyze large-scale SCADA and telemetry datasets related to BESS and PV power plant performance to troubleshoot underperforming systems and identify component failures.
Collaborate directly with the Data Scientist to integrate BESS telemetry with enterprise platforms, warehouse data efficiently, and automate internal and external reporting pipelines.
Work with cross-functional teams to model the performance impacts of transitioning from standalone BESS to AC and DC-coupled BESS + PV configurations.
Present operational and financial findings, alongside recommended corrective actions or dispatch strategies, to technical and non-technical stakeholders to enable clarity and business impact.
Qualifications and Experience
Master's or Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, such as electrical engineering, computer science, data science, math, or physics, with 3-5 years of experience in performance engineering, battery modeling, or data analytics specifically tailored to energy storage.
Strong understanding of battery energy storage architecture, degradation mechanisms, and performance modeling.
Experience with the operation, design, and/or analysis of AC and DC electric power systems.
Strong proficiency in Python, R, or SQL for data analysis, time-series data manipulation, and modeling.
Proficiency in leveraging Generative AI tools (e.g., Claude Code) and Large Language Models (LLMs) to accelerate code development, automate data processing workflows, and streamline complex analytics.
Hands-on experience with business intelligence and analytical tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau, Pandas, NumPy, Matplotlib).
Proven track record of working with SCADA, DAS, and discrete event data for plant performance assessments.
Strong critical thinking skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
The ideal candidate will have
Direct experience working in the renewable power industry, specifically evaluating the performance of DG or utility-scale BESS and PV assets.
Experience performing financial analysis related to wholesale energy markets, ISO/RTO dispatch strategies, and Locational Marginal Pricing (LMP) rate optimization to inform and improve BESS market dispatch decisions.
Experience analyzing both standalone storage and coupled (AC/DC) solar-plus-storage projects.
Knowledge of SCADA and DAS (e.g. AlsoEnergy, GPM, Powerfactors, Ignition, Wattch, Denowatts, SynaptiQ, PI System, etc.)
Practical experience working in cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure) and developing data infrastructure.
Demonstrated track record of designing and deploying AI-driven workflows to enhance predictive modeling, automate repetitive processes, and drive operational efficiencies.
Knowledge of machine learning algorithms and statistical methods for predictive analytics.
Familiarity with CMMS systems (e.g., Fiix, Maximo, Sitetracker).
